Please let us know your plans by 31st March 2020. UPDATE: At the moment, we intend to go ahead with the wedding as initially planned but we will continue to monitor how the spread of COVID-19 develops in Bulgaria and in the UK and we will review our decision accordingly. We do understand that you may not be able to RSVP at this stage. Please take your time -- we hope we get to celebrate together.
Pravets is 56 km (about 35 miles) away from Sofia and it takes an hour by bus and about 40 min by car (if you are a local who knows the shortcuts, where all potholes are and can read the tiny sign in Cyrillic that shows the slip road to Pravets, otherwise it may take you about an hour).
The only two ways to get to Pravets from Sofia are either by car or by getting the bus (no railway). If you tell us you flight details, we can also arrange airport transfer for you. Otherwise, car rental is available at Sofia airport. If you would like to travel by bus, you can catch one from either Central Bus Station or Poduyane Bus station (close to Vasil Levski Stadium, more frequent busses from there). Bus tickets range between 5.50 and 9 BGN (2.50 -3.95 GBP) and it takes an hour to reach Pravets. From T2 of Sofia Airport you can take the metro (tube) which takes you straight to Central Bus Station. Alternatively, from T1 you take bus No. 84, then get off at Sofia University stop and take tram No. 1 to Vasil Levski Stadium ('Gerena'). There is also a shuttle bus between T1 and T2 of Sofia Airport but funnily enough it stops running at 7 pm so your only option would be taxi. Please bear in mind that the distance between the terminals is only 2 km so taxi should only be max 5 lv.
We have provisionally booked a hotel in Pravets (Riu Pravets Resort) but the ceremony and reception are taking place in Restaurant Nobilis in Botevgrad, which is only 10 km (6.2 miles) away. We will be organising transfer from the hotel to the wedding venue but you can drive or take the local bus, which is every 40 minutes and costs 1.50 BGN (about 0.66 GBP). The bus is very slow, stops at every village and takes 20 min to reach Botevgrad.
Yes, absolutely!
No. We DO NOT want any presents (and we are very serious about it!!!). It may sound cheesy but the fact that you will be coming all the way to Pravets/ Bulgaria to spend our special day with us is more than enough. If you do want to do something for us, make sure you have as much fun as possible over the course of the weekend and write a message for us in a card so we can treasure it for years to come.
We have listed a few options on our 'Things to do' page. You can also play tennis or go for a walk along the Topilata- Kamicheto or Borovets eco path, which leads to a the ridge hill ruins of a Roman fortress dating back to 3rd-6th c. This is located 4 km away from the village of Razliv., which is probably around 1-2 km from Razliv. The hotel is 2 km away (just over a mile) from Pravets city centre where there a number of places to eat such as 'The Green House' (https://webcroud.com/detail/picariq-zelenata-kashta-1267) , 'Doni', 'Zlatnata Ribka (for local cuisine -just opposite the Todor Zhivkov Monument) or Praveshki hanove (http://www.praveshki-hanove.com/) even offers a wine tasting sessions. We also recommend visiting the nearby Chekotino Monastery, the Prohodna- 'God's eyes Cave' (35-40 km away), the Glozhene Monastery.
For the beach lovers: The Bulgaria Black Sea Coast is beatuful this time of the year -- so we recommend Sozopol, Nessebar, Gradina, Bourgas or Varna. For the mountain lovers: check out the Seven Rila Lakes or climb the highest peak on the Balkan peninsula Moussala (2925 m. ), Malyovitsa (2729 m.), Murgash (1687 m) or Cherni Vrah (Black Peak), which is Vitosha's highest peak at 1259 m. For those who love history and culture: we recommend Plovdiv (Bulgaria's second biggest city and 2019 European Capital of Cutlure) which is 2 hours away from Sofia. Roughly the same distance but in Northern Bulgaria is Veliko Tarnovo which is the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (hence why it is known as the 'City of Tsars'). We can also recommend something more off the beaten track if you prefer that- just drop us an email at mikeandelenawedding2020@gmail.com.
If you are planning on travelling outside Bulgaria after or before the wedding, we recommend visiting any of the neighboring countries: Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey and Romania.
Always carry some cash with you as you are likely to be able to pay by card only in larger cities and in bigger shops/ restaurants (so you may need cash everywhere in the Pravets/ Botevgrad region). The prices of bus/train tickets are set and do not vary whether you buy the ticket on the day or in advance. If you are travelling by bus from Sofia to Pravets or between Pravets and Botevgrad you cannot buy tickets in advance -- you purchase them from the driver / ticket conductor. Just be wary that most signs are in Cyrillic only and the older generation in Bulgarian has studid mainly Russian and a bit of French. So, if you are asking for directions, younger people may be a better bet (we are generalising though so you never know)
We highly recommend reading this guide: https://freesofiatour.com/blog/sofia-public-transport-guide/ There are trams, trolleys, buses, metro and marshrutka (mini vans turned into mini buses) in Sofia. A standard ticket is 1.60 lv. BGN (0.70 GBP) . А separate ticket for your luggage is no longer needed (free for up to 2 pieces of hand luggage )but if you travel without one for yourself you will be fined 50 lv BGN. Be careful with taxi drivers around the airport, as they have a reputation of trying to charge foreign tourists more -- note the distance between the airport and city centre is only 6 km!
