Travel & Stay

This page includes hotel booking codes, airport options, and some Washington-specific travel notes that those traveling from out-of-state should take note of.

Travel Note

Washington State Ferries (WSF)

DIRECTIONS: Guests choosing to lean into Washington's marine culture should: 1. Take Tukwila International Blvd north from SeaTac Airport's rental car facility, then; 2. Continue onto Marginal Way, which becomes State Route 99, then; 3. Onto Alaskan Way South, following signs for Colman Dock for access to WSF's services to either Bremerton or Bainbridge Island. NOTE: Colman Dock can only be accessed via a dedicated left turn lane from Alaskan Way South, traveling northbound. There is NO RIGHT TURN into Colman Dock traveling southbound on Alaskan Way, and NO STRAIGHT ACCESS to Colman Dock from Yesler Way traveling westbound. The Bainbridge Island route is the shorter of the two both in terms of on-water time and total journey time to Port Angeles, but the Bremerton route is more scenic (though we might be biased, as it is also our home route). ABOUT: WSF is the state's marine highway system, operating regular service across nearly a dozen routes throughout the Puget Sound. If you want a break on the drive out to Port Angeles, you can use the aforementioned Bainbridge Island or Bremerton WSF routes as alternatives to driving around the Sound to the south. Personally, we recommend taking at least one ferry ride while you're here in Washington; they showcase the beauty of our state like nothing else.

Travel Note

Hood Canal Floating Bridge

All routes to Port Angeles from the Seattle area require crossing the Hood Canal over the third-longest floating bridge in the world. Enjoy the views (and keep an eye out for the US Navy), but make sure to check the link below for the bridge status. Openings can cause delays of up to an hour, but have not frequently been a signficant problem in our experience. There is no toll on this bridge.

Seattle-Tacoma Intenational Airport

SeaTac is the primary airport for the Puget Sound Region. From here, guests will need to rent a car for the drive out to the Olympic Peninsula, where Port Angeles is located. Travel time from SeaTac to Port Angeles is approximately 2-2.5 hours via car. Travel time is similar whether you choose to drive around Puget Sound or utilize the Washington State Ferry system. For ferry information, se above. For driving directions, see below. NOTE: The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which carries SR 16 from Tacoma onto the Kitsap Peninsula, is tolled south/eastbound only. DRIVING DIRECTIONS (NO FERRY): 1. Exit the SEA Rental Car Facility following signs for State Route 518 (SR 518) East / I-5 South, then; 2. Follow I-5 South to Tacoma, then; 3. Use exit 132B (either the regular or HOV option) to State Route 16 (SR 16) West to Gig Harbor and Bremerton, then; 4. Follow SR 16 to Gorst, then follow signs for State Route 3 (SR 3) North to Bremerton and Poulsbo, then; 5. Follow SR 3 until a T-intersection with State Route 104 (SR 104), where you will turn left to cross the Hood Canal Bridge (see above for bridge information), then; 6. Follow SR 104 to the intersection with US 101, then follow signs for US 101 North to Port Angeles, then; 7. Follow US 101 North to your destination. If staying at 7 Cedars, the Jamestown S'klallam Tribal Center will be your warning that you are about to arrive at the hotel. If you are staying at the Red Lion Port Angeles Harbor, follow US 101 into downtown Port Angeles.

Flight

Paine Field

Officially "Seattle Paine Field," don't let the name fool you. The Seattle region's secondary airport is just south of Everett, WA, approximately 25 miles north of Seattle. Guests arriving from Phoenix, AZ or Southern California can use this airport as an alternative, but the drive to Port Angeles will be longer and more complicated.
