Hilary and Drew crossed paths at the Women's World Cup Ski Race in Killington, VT. Hilary was there to support her sister (Foreste), and Drew was there for work (with Spyder). In the VIP tent, catching up with mutual old friends, Hilary and Drew struck up a conversation. They realized they both went to CU (overlapping for 3 years) and had been at many of the same ski races and training venues across the world. They also learned they both lived in Boulder, CO and had many shared interests and mutual friends. After running into each other again, the next weekend, this time at the Men's World Cup Ski Race in Beaver Creek, CO, they decided to hang out in Boulder. Their first date was at Rayback Collective in Boulder on December 10, 2019. The rest is history!
On their trip of a lifetime (so far), Hilary and Drew's first stop outside of the US was to Iceland. Drew had been hoping for a unique and special place to propose, and felt Iceland was just that. Given Hilary's dream of riding Icelandic horses, Drew thought the perfect time to propose would be on their trail ride to the Vatnajökull glacier (see picture below). Drew, who is not an equestrian like Hilary, was focused on staying on the back of the horse during the ride, and decided this was not the right situation for the proposal. After the trail ride, Hilary and Drew drove further around the island to hike Múlagljúfur Canyon. As they pulled into the parking lot it started to pour rain. They made sandwiches in their camper van to buy some time, but the rain did not let up. They decided to tough it out and do the hike anyway. At the top of the canyon, Drew checked in to see how Hilary was doing. She shared she was soaked to her third innermost layer, and Drew delayed the proposal again given Hilary hates the rain, and especially dislikes being wet in the cold. Plan C - After a night at the campground in Vik, with limited dry clothes, Hilary and Drew began their drive back to Reykjavik to fly out the next day. The plan was to stop and check out some of the biggest tourist attractions on the way. At this point Drew was getting stressed, as he was determined to make his Icelandic proposal special, and the options were becoming scarce. After another sandwich lunch in the camper van, Hilary and Drew hiked to the top of Skógafoss with thousands of other tourists. The waterfall was incredible and the expansive views from the top were breathtaking. Drew veered off the main trail, across the grassy hillside, and Hilary followed him, though somewhat reluctantly. Once around the corner, and away from the crowds, Drew got down on one knee and proposed!
