One of our favorite experiences in Washington. After sunset, many of the city’s memorials are beautifully illuminated and the crowds are much smaller. The Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, World War II Memorial, and Washington Monument are especially stunning in the evening.
One of the most interactive museums in Washington and a great choice for families. Visitors can test their spy skills through hands-on exhibits, learn about real espionage operations, and explore the history of intelligence gathering from around the world. It is especially popular with elementary school-aged children, though adults often enjoy it just as much. Unlike most museums in DC, admission is not free, so be sure to purchase tickets in advance if you plan to visit.
For something a little different, we highly recommend one of DC’s ghost tours. There are many tour providers and we have had great luck with all of them. These guided walking tours combine history, architecture, and local legends while exploring some of the city’s most famous neighborhoods and landmarks. They are a fun way to experience the city after dark and are especially popular in Georgetown.
One of the most unique attractions in Washington. Part museum, part historic mansion, part treasure hunt, The Mansion on O Street is filled with thousands of antiques, collectibles, books, artwork, and hidden passageways. Visitors can spend hours searching for the mansion’s secret doors and exploring its themed rooms. A word of caution: the experience is a little dusty and packed floor-to-ceiling with memorabilia, so it’s best suited for people who love antique stores, thrift shops, and quirky collections. If you’re a germaphobe or prefer a more polished museum experience, this may not be for you.
One of the most memorable experiences we’ve had in DC. Last summer, we rented a hot tub boat to celebrate DJ’s birthday and had an absolute blast cruising around the Potomac River while soaking in a hot tub. It’s definitely a splurge and probably one of the pricier activities on this list, but it’s a fun and uniquely DC experience if you’re celebrating a special occasion or traveling with a group.
