How We Met

10.02.2015 | "Who's that gringa in my bar?" | Ashburn, VA

On my first day of work at Sol Azteca, they threw me into the fray by having me work the bar on the very first night. I arrived earlier than the normal bartending shift, so when Alfredo showed up for his shift, he saw me standing behind the bar, looking lost. He's since confessed that his first thought was, "Hey, what's that gringa doing in my bar?" Mine was "Who's this Mr. Muscle guy?" As he trained me on the bar and showed me how to make margaritas, his hands were shaking, and he even bashfully admitted he was nervous. I think that was the start of me falling for him - despite the outward appearance I saw through to his gentle spirit. We soon found out that we enjoyed each other's company. He'd show up early to work so that he could make me breakfast in the restaurant kitchen. I'd visit on my days off, doing homework up at the bar, just so I could spend time with him while he worked. We started going to early church together before our Sunday morning shifts. Our first real date was going hiking at Dolly Sods, West Virginia (where he'd propose two years later). We bonded over adventure and good food, and we've been inseparable ever since.

How He Proposed

10.30.2017 | Autumn Leaves & October Snow | Dolly Sods, WV

In the fall, we hike. The outdoors is great other parts of the year too, of course, but from September to mid November, we try and get out to the mountains every. single. weekend. Well, it was a weekend almost like any other, but the foliage was nearing its end for the season. So despite the fact that it was raining in Ashburn, we decided to head out to WV to enjoy one of our favorite hikes, Dolly Sods. As we drove through the mountain pass that separates VA & WV, it was foggy and wet, but the leaves were gorgeous. As we drove further and further up in altitude, the rain began to turn to snow. In fact, once we reached the top, we could've sworn we were somewhere in Canada. Because of the altitude, all the leaves were already fallen and the only foliage was the green of the pine trees. Everything, every last needle, was covered in a thick blanket of snow. Praise the Lord for the four-wheel-drive on our beloved F-150. The snow was too deep to hike in unprepared, so we settled for exploring by car (and Alfredo insisted on doing donuts on the flat parts of the road). I was snapping pictures left & right, amazed by how gorgeous the scenery was. Later, on our way back down the mountain, the sun was shining through the leaves (at this altitude there were leaves - all bright orange and yellow as it was still just October) and glistening off the snow. It was breathtaking, truly. I of course, was snapping away. Rounding a bend, Alfredo slowed to a stop and asked me if we wanted to set the camera up on a timer and get a picture of the two of us, as a "recuerdo" (keepsake). I happily obliged. Swirling leaves, blue sky, and a snow covered path was our background. I put the camera on the hood of the truck on a ten second timer and ran to where he was standing. I got ready to pose, but he wasn't standing next to me. Where was he? I looked down to yell at him for not posing, but realized he was right there, on one knee. "Te casas conmigo?" he asked. My answer, an overjoyed YES!
