The Alhambra is the Arabic Palace built in 886 and taken over by the Spaniards in 1462, when Queen Elizabeth conquered Granada. The Alhambra is the most visited monument in Spain, and 3rd most visited monument in Europe. Shane and I highly recommend recommend you not only visit this magical place, but reserve tickets in advance. Click on 'VIEW' below to visit the website and get more information and reserve tickets. P.S. Our venue sits right below the Alhambra on a cliff :)
El Mirado de San Nicolas, in the Albaycin, is probably the 2nd most visited area in Granada after The Alhambra. It is such a beautiful place! You are very likely to see locals playing and dancing flamenco, and even local artisans selling craft. Bill Clinton made this plaza world famous - believe it or not - when he was president after telling a journalist 'The sunset at the Mirado de San Nicolas was the most beautiful sunset he has ever seen'. This was a popular headline in the Spanish newsletter for a while. It's a bit of a hike through the narrow, rough cobblestone ally ways in the Albaycin neighborhood, but so gorgeous. Shane and I would go there often with friends.
This is one of many places you can watch a Flamenco performance. This place in particular is well-known, not only for the location in a cave, but for the performances. You can choose to watch only the show, or eat dinner at their restaurant and then watch the show. If you YouTube this location you will find many videos, including visitors Ex First Lady, Michelle Obama and Anthony Bourdain from his travel show (on Netflex).
This building is right next to the main Cathedral. This place is important because it is the chapel that the famous Queen Elizabeth, who conquered the city of Granada last from the Moors, built for her family and is buried, along with her husband King Ferdinan. The hours are strict so click on the link to see times and prices.
This is the main Cathedral in Granada. There are great spice markets and tapa restaurants around the church as well. BE AWARE OF THE GIPSIES! See 'Travel and Places' for the warning description. FUN FACT - The same architecture who built this Cathedral also built the Cathedral in Lima, Peru.
Arabic Baths? WHY NOT? This is the ultimate Granada spa location. Hammam Al Andalus is a recently renovated monumental space that captures the essence of the ancient Arab Baths of Al Ándalus. Arab baths are composed of five thermal baths at different temperatures that were part of the ritual routine of purification and beauty that along with the steam, resting and massage rooms form an architectural ensemble characterized by beautiful Nazari decor which induces relaxation of body and mind. If you have the time and opportunity, we highly recommend you try this place. Sundays they have discounts! Or, buy tickets online.
Granada is the only city in Spain where if you go to a bar and order a beer, wine or soda, they will give you a free tapa, or small appetizer. You can literally get full from just ordering beer and wine all night because you will always get food with it. Some places allow you to pick your tapa, but most have a designated 'first tapa', 'second tapa' and so forth. You WON'T get a tapa in these situations: 1. If you sit down at a restaurant and eat the menu (usually a 3 course meal), your drinks will most likely not come with a tapa. 2. If you order a cocktail, your drink will NOT come with a tapa.
