FAQs

Ocracoke is a unique destination. Here is some additional information about the island and some of our favorite spots!
Question

Why Ocracoke?

Answer

We fell in love with this remote little island when we first started dating. Our first trip to the island together was in 2017 and we’ve visited every year (multiple times a year) since! Not to mention, this is where we got engaged! The island holds a lot of meaning for us and we’re so excited to share it with you!

Question

What is Ocracoke’s weather in May?

Answer

The last month of the spring, May, is a pleasant month in Ocracoke, North Carolina, with an average temperature varying between 65°F and 75°F. The average relative humidity in May is around 79% and the average wind speed is 15.5mph. Sunrise is generally 5:51am and sunset around 8:12pm.

Question

Can I drive to the island?

Answer

Yes, but you have to take a ferry from Swan Quarter Ferry Terminal or Hatteras Ferry Terminal to the Ocracoke Ferry Terminal. The ferries are drive-aboard, so you can technically drive to the island. See the travel tab for additional info on ferries.

Question

What is the dress code?

Answer

Casual cocktail attire! Ocracoke is a laid-back island, so wear what's comfortable! Note: The ceremony will be outdoors and on grass.

Question

Are kids welcome?

Answer

As much as we love and adore all of the children in our life, we are only inviting children in the wedding party. We sincerely regret that we are unable to accommodate children and hope you'll use this as your getaway weekend!

Question

Is there a market on the island?

Answer

Yes, but you won’t find any chains! Ocracoke Variety Store is your one stop shop for all things! You’ll find everything from bug spray, to beer, to fresh produce and beach chairs!

Question

Where can we get breakfast?

Answer

Our favorite breakfast spot is Eduardo’s! Talk about a good breakfast burrito! Jerniman’s also offers a classic breakfast option or Ocracoke Coffee has coffee, bagels and pastries. Check out our “Things To Do” page for all our food recommendations! You can’t go wrong with any breakfast spot on the island!

Question

Can I drive out on the beach?

Answer

Yes! There are many ramps to take you out onto the beach where you can drive along the shore! This does require an ORV Pass which is $50/week or $150/year. You can purchase a pass here and print it for your windshield: https://www.recreation.gov/vehiclepermits/249978 Look out for sea turtles though! They’re marked, so don’t go near them!

Question

How close is the next city?

Answer

Close! Just a ferry-ride away! You can take a trip up to Hatteras on the main stretch of Outer Banks and visit the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse or explore Rodanthe and see the famous Nicholas Sparks house. See the travel tab for information on the ferry to Hatteras.

Question

Is there a hospital on the island?

Answer

No, there is not a hospital on the island. The Ocracoke Health Center is the only medical facility on the island. It is open Monday - Friday. The closest hospital is the Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, NC.
