Authentically restored quarters and exhibits, including the original lens, a chance to explore the second floor of the house, tours of the lighthouse tower, a movie, Shipwrecks of the Straits, and the Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Museum make this “Castle of the Straits” a true gem of the Great Lakes.

Join trained naturalists for engaging programs showcasing the North Woods, and then take time to explore the natural beauty of Mill Creek State Park, which has more than three miles of groomed hiking trails.

The North Central State Trail (NCST) is a top Midwest cycling destination that started off as a railroad, featuring a crushed limestone surface and flat terrain ideal for easy riding and walking through scenic areas. It was once recognized as one of the nation’s top five fall destinations by Rails to Trails Conservancy. Cheboygan to Mackinaw City – 16.3 miles: This scenic trail runs alongside US-23 through forested areas with Lake Huron views. Cheboygan and Mackinaw City trailheads offer parking, restrooms, water, and nearby amenities. A midway stop at an MDOT park features picnic areas and a Mackinac Bridge view. Riders can also visit Historic Mill Creek Park or continue to Petoskey or Mackinac Island.

Since opening in 1922, the Cheboygan Golf & Country Club has built a reputation for offering quality playing conditions to golfers in northern Michigan. The 18 holes of "Championship Golf" is open to the public, and offers the golfer a variety of holes to play. The front nine has a "Scottish" style with rolling mounds and a few trees to contend with, while the back nine features a picturesque northern woodlands design. The entire golf course is enjoyable to play because it is not overly long and easy to walk. However, the smaller, smooth greens will put an emphasis on your short game making it challenging enough for the most experienced of golfer

Our favorite local hike! Head out on this 1.6 mile out-and-back trail near Carp Lake, Michigan. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 28 min to complete. This trail is great for birding, hiking, and running, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Walk right along the lake!

McGulpin Point Lighthouse

Emmet County owns the historic McGulpin Point Lighthouse, which protected shipping on the Straits of Mackinac against storms, fog and rocks between 1869 and 1906. It was purchased by the county in 2008, which reopened McGulpin to the public with a gala celebration on May 30, 2009. The site is approximately 10 acres and is a half mile north of the Headlands. It includes 336 feet of shoreline on the Straits with a commanding view of the Mackinac Bridge.

Wilderness State Park, located just 11 miles west of Mackinaw City, is home to 26 miles of beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline, 20-plus miles of trails, a designated swimming and pet-friendly beach and unique camping opportunities. The park is also a designated dark sky preserve offering stellar views of the sky and is just 9 miles from Headlands Dark Sky Park (an Emmet County park). From some areas of the park, you can see the 170-year-old Waugoshance Lighthouse (looking west) near the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge (looking east). The terrain is a mixture of dense coniferous forest and mature hardwood forest, with pockets of open meadows and carpets of wildflowers in the spring. There is an abundance of small ponds mixed in with coniferous wetlands. Please pay attention to trail signage and carry a map.
