The namesake of the Pond where we are getting married on, Pleasant Pond Mountain is a fond and special place. Ali and her family have been hiking this mountain since they were children, but it has also been hiked by grandparents and family members who are no longer with us today. We highly recommend this moderate 1.5 hour hike and a dip in the pond after! You can access the trail by taking a left onto East Road from N. Cove Road and drive to the bottom of the hill where you see a small parking area. You can access the pond via a path on the non-mountain side of the road where you parked. Walk down <5 minutes to a dock and tiny sliver of beach to enjoy shallow, calm waters
Though its nothing fancy, this has been our family’s go to spot to pick up beers, snacks, t-shirts, gas and random items (e.g., fishing gear to fox tails and animal-hide rugs). Stop by for your weekend basics but don’t count on doing your groceries here. Berry’s is your classic back-woods general store, where you never know what you are going to find!
The Kennebec river has a lot to offer including rafting and tubing. For those interested in rafting, we have booked excursions on Friday, August 18th through Northern Outdoors. Please see RSVP page to book your spot (first come first serve). You can also go tubing down the non-white water portion of the river. Northern Outdoors, Three Rivers and other rafting companies have tube and kayak rentals, though if you happen to have your own, you can access the river in The Forks where there is parking (near Berry’s General Store).
Although we can’t tell you how it got its name (trust us, there are not an abnormal amount of mosquitoes on the hike), we can say this is our favorite hike. Though it can be rigorous, it is worth the ~3 hr round trip for the views. There are 2 view points, with the first one about 2/3rds of the way through the hike. They both give you unobstructed panoramic views of the area. On a clear day, you might even see Mt. Katahdin, the northernmost mountain on the Appalachian trial. Bonus is that by mid-August the blueberries will be ripe and sweet so don’t forget to pick a handful at the top!
If you are interested in launching boat and kayaks, you can do so at both Lake Moxie and Pleasant Pond via their boat launches. Northern and 3 Rivers offer kayak and tube rentals for those interested
Visit this tiny library at the red farmhouse. This library is dedicated to Joan Bateman, my great aunt, and the cute reading garden is dedicated to her sister, my grandmother, Sondra Scott
