How we met

A modern day love story

It all started with a swipe right... In 2020, Will and Amber both turned to one of the only available options for meeting someone during a global pandemic - dating apps - Bumble, to be specific :) The two matched and after 2 successful video chats, they decided to meet in person and go on a "real" date. They decided to meet at a park halfway between their houses. After walking around a lake for awhile with great conversation, both wanted the date to continue, so they found a sushi place not far from where they were, ordered takeout, and went back to the park for dinner. Everything about the conversation was easy and when the date ended, they both knew they wanted to see each other again. The rest is history.

The proposal

Tiki Tuesday becomes forever

Will and Amber had a trip planned to Kauai, Hawaii and to kickoff the vacation week, Will suggested they check out a local restaurant that hosted Tiki Tuesdays. It turns out this was a clever ruse to make sure Amber wasn't in sweatpants (the chosen attire for the work from home peeps). While Amber and Will are getting ready for Tiki Tuesday, Will mentions that his best friend (shout out Kevin!) created a dating app and he wants Amber to Beta test it. For some, this may seem odd, however Amber did not think anything of it since Will has Beta tested apps for Kevin in the past. So Will pulls out his phone and gives it to Amber for her to test out the app. The app, called The One, starts off with a couple generic questions like "male or female", what are you looking for - "long term relationship or something casual"? But as you click through, the app gets more and more specific to Amber and Will's relationship including the first TV show they binge watched together and "what band would you prefer to listen to while cooking dinner - Vampire Weekend or Tool?" (Amber and Will listen to Vampire Weekend every night when they make dinner). The turning point in the app was "What would you like to find your partner doing at 11:30 on a Monday - working out next to you or stuck at the lab?" (Will and Amber have a standing workout meeting at 11:30 every Monday and Friday) and with that question, Amber looked at Will and was like, "WHAT?!" and with a smile on his face, he told her to keep going. The next question read "Where would you rather go for vacation - Park City, Utah to hit the slopes or Hawaii to celebrate your engagement!?" and with that Will got down on one knee and proposed. Without hesitation, Amber of course said yes! The last slide of the "dating app" reads "We found your perfect match" with Will's Bumble profile picture. When asked why Will chose to propose at home, his response was since we were a pandemic relationship, most of the time we spent together while dating was at each other's houses before buying a house, moving in together, and making it into our home. He felt that proposing in the home that they had built together was the perfect place, and he was right!
