We feel blessed to have met each other later in our lives and to have made so many great memories already together! These include many fun weekend getaways throughout CA including Los Angeles, Julian, Idyllwild, Sonoma and San Francisco along with cross country trips to PA, MA, RI and FLA! Cooking at home is a passionate hobby for us both. Our cooking strategies are like night and day though since I'm recipe driven and Corey creates dishes as he goes! We also share passions for hiking, exploring historical architecture within cities and military bases, going to see live concerts, on stage theatre, sci-fi movies and hosting backyard BBQs for family and friends.
Our story begins with a date filled with great conversation, singing and guitar playing and ending with a sweet kiss and plans to meet again soon. The internet brought us together back in 2015 where I realized I made the first move by asking him out on our first date! Corey is a musician and mentioned that he missed going to open mic nights. I quickly suggested that he check out Lestat’s Open Mic in North Park on Monday nights at 6pm and he replied “Monday at 6pm, sounds good, I’ve got a couple of songs in mind and I’ll see you then”. I immediately thought this guy has some guts to get up on stage and perform on a first date and was excited to say the least! We met for the first time that Monday night, February 16th, when I walked in and saw Corey standing at the counter viewing the coffee selection with guitar in hand. I knew it was him right away and hugged him as soon as our eyes met. We grabbed a table and chatted (well, he’ll tell you I did most of the talking!) for almost an hour before realizing we needed to place Corey’s name in the jar to be called when the open mic started in the venue next door at 7pm. Little did we know it was a competitive open mic night and already a ton of names in the jar, yikes! We headed next door and took our seats in the dark venue. The host started to announce available time slots and it seemed almost all were booked so Corey took the first one available at 10pm. After about 2 hours of watching performers, Corey looked at me and said “Want to get out of here?”. I agreed but was sad to end the fun date, so, when we went outside, I said to him, “I’m sorry you didn’t get a chance to play your songs”. He then replied “I can play for you right here”. We walked over to an storefront alcove, he took out his guitar and started to sing and play! Needless to say, I was impressed. How could I not be? People passing by had the chance to enjoy his music too. What a fantastic first date sealed with a sweet kiss.
Jen is from Seekonk, Massachusetts but it’s actually Rhode Island that holds a special place (and accent!) in her heart. She's an only child and feels lucky to have grown up in a small town neighborhood and the same house until she was 23 years old. She lived in RI as a young adult and obtained both of her college degrees from the Providence area. Jen’s loving parents (Duke and Linda), who have been married for almost 44 years, taught her how to be a caring and independent woman. Her parents relocated to Southwest Florida about 10 years ago and love it! Fun facts - She's moved across the country twice (both times to SoCal), is left-handed, loves spending time with friends, avid cook, has seen over 200+ bands and counting in concert and has hosted and produced her own T.V. shows. After many years within the human resources field she decided to start a new career as a Warriors to Work Specialist (Veteran Job Coach) with the Wounded Warrior Project. Now she’s in a career and organizational culture she loves and met Corey around the time she was interviewing with WWP. It was such a gratifying time to start a lifelong partnership with her renaissance man!
Corey was born into a military family in Wiesbaden, Germany. He has 4 other siblings (Remy, Chris, Carter & Conan) and his parents (Peter and Cathy) recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary! His family moved a couple of times while he was growing up until settling in Mechanicsburg, PA. Upon graduating high school, he started a new chapter in his life by joining the United States Navy. During his military career, he served as a Hospital Corpsman providing medical care to the sick and injured among other specialties such as becoming a U.S. Navy certified diver. Fun facts - he will be retiring in June of 2018 after 24 years of dedicated service and most recently, earned his Associate Degree in Nursing and passed his California Registered Nurse State Board exam! Corey also loves to play guitar and sing for an audience and was in a band for over 6 years in VA and had a CD produced from that time period. If you ask him how he has spent his adult life he would say, “I learn and experience life”. Even though he is transitioning out of the military, he is happy to be staying within the healthcare field. He was looking for a woman that he could experience life with, compliment him (not the hand clapping way) and be his best friend. He found her in Jen.
Our engagement is a sweet story with Corey suggesting a day trip east to the mountains of Julian, CA in November of 2017. Julian was one of the first day trips we took together when we first met so it holds a special place in our hearts. Plus it reminds us of the Northeast so it’s a little bit of home with it's strong feel of nature and a quaint center of town. We headed up with a packed lunch to hike a beautiful trail on a gorgeous fall day at William Heisse County Park. Then had lunch outside under the oak trees and soon after headed closer into town for an Eagle Gold Mine tour which was such a blast (no pun intended)! A visit to Main Street was always an essential part of our visits where we had two slices of pie to share for dinner. Corey got down on one knee and popped the question under the stars when it was just the two of us and of course I said yes!
