No surprises here but the #1 recommendation is Kilkenny Castle, which dates back to the 13th Century. Whether you decide to go inside or simply walk the castle park & grounds it is well worth the visit.
Built around the same time as the castle, this cathedral is the second longest in all of Ireland. The Round Tower goes back even further to the 9th Century and is one of only two round towers in Ireland that allows visitors. To get a nice view of Kilkenny, climb the steps of the 100 ft tower.
The Medieval Mile is the moniker for the walk between St. Canice’s Cathedral to Kilkenny Castle. This cobblestone walk is full of shops, restaurants, and pubs, pubs, and more pubs. Consider booking a ghost tour for a night time history tour of the area.
While Guinness gets the notoriety, Smithwick’s is actually the older of the two Irish beers, pre-dating Guinness by almost 50 years. Founded in Kilkenny in 1710, this Irish red-ale is still brewed in town and has been renovated to accommodate visitors/tastings. Pro Tip: To avoid embarrassment, don’t pronounce the W.
For a peek into how the wealthy lived in late-16th Century Ireland, take a stroll through the Rothe House. The Rothe’s were a merchant family whose house remains well preserved and now serves as a cultural site. The garden at the back of the house is worth the visit on its own.
The River Nore cuts through the heart of Kilkenny past the castle and park. If you keep following it, it will take you all the way to the nearby Bennettsbridge village (approximately 5 miles one way).
Located only a few minutes outside of Kilkenny is the home of the 2021 Irish Open. Book your tee times in advance!
Located a few minutes north of Kilkenny city is a cave with a gruesome viking history. Open for guided tours!
Waterford is located about 30 miles from Kilkenny while Wexford is about 45 miles away. Both towns are located at the coast if you are looking for change of scenery but still want a larger town feel.
If you want seaside views, there are dozens of options to choose from. We personally have been to Tramore, Dunmore East, and Dungarvan, which were lovely visits.
