We met at the University of Michigan during undergrad, while we both worked student jobs at Bert's Cafe! The cafe extended hours to be 24/7 and needed volunteers to work the overnight shifts, which is how we landed on quite a few shifts working together! A typical night on these shifts would include lengthy conversations about Game of Thrones, far too many espresso shots, experimental coffee creations (do not try to make a Red Bull latte), and 2 am takeout from Pizza House for their personal pizza and milkshake deal. It took us way too many of these shifts together before realizing what an amazing, fun team we make and how well those dynamics could work in a relationship!
- Our first conversation was about Game of Thrones - Our first kiss was on a dare while playing a game called "CharDee MacDennis" (watch It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia!) - Jess made the first move, inviting Connor over to watch movies on a Saturday night (it took him hours to respond because he was at the Umich football game and had no cell service!) - Our first "date" was that movie night, during which we watched Hercules and Silence of the Lambs while eating leftover baked brie with crackers - Our first real date out in the world was at Nick's House of Pancakes, where our deep love for brunch was solidified - Our first vacation together was a ski trip to Nub's Nob - We bought each other the same gifts for our first Christmas together (waffle makers) and our first anniversary (craft beer making kits)!
From Jess's Perspective: I had a crazy stressful night at class, and called Connor to complain about it on my way home. He kept asking what time I would be home for dinner, and I was mildly confused about why he needed a specific ETA so badly since I'm always home at the same time after class. I walked in the door and Connor was down on one knee, with all of the lights down and candles all over our living room. I was completely shocked and overwhelmed with happiness. He created the perfect evening at home to celebrate with homemade brinner, Scotch, my favorite prosecco, our favorite candies, and a bouquet of "flours". I secretly always hoped that he would propose at our apartment, where we have lived for the past few years and have built our happy little life together. The timing was also amazing since we had a mini ski trip vacation planned for that upcoming weekend, so we were able to celebrate together for a few days before getting back to the real world! It was absolutely perfect!
