Everything North of Venice to the Dolomites is NECESSARY to have a car. Public transportation is limited. Getting to all major cities South and West of Venice can be traveled by train or bus.
I have only traveled from Florence to Greve by Bus due to ease. Bus ticket 4-5 euros. 1 hour travel time. Luggage storage under bus *load/unload own bags yourself Google Maps: Florence Bus Station to Greve in Chianti *If traveling from Greve to Florence on Sunday, last day of the festival has a large amount of travelers. Get to the bus stop at least 15-20 minutes before departing to ensure bus luggage storage. *Be careful to not book train travel shortly after arriving Florence in case you miss your planned bus time. There are no car services to get you to Florence and you will not be able to get a refund for your train ticket for a later time.
