Lake Merritt
Oakland's crown jewel is Lake Merritt, right in its heart. This gorgeous locale is home to seabirds, ducks, and the occasional otter, not to mention an adorable children's theme park, an amphitheater frequently occupied by shows, and paddle-boat rentals. Summer days in Oakland are typically spent in the parks surrounding the water.
Oakland Museum of California
This impressive museum specializes in art and history, with exciting rotating exhibits. The grounds are also expansive, featuring multi-tiered picnic areas perfect for a pleasant afternoon.
Grand Lake Theatre
This landmark of our city is a stunning 1920's gem. Operating as a totally modern movie theater with spicey marquees, this is where we see all our flicks!
Rosenblum Cellars
There's nothing like watching the sun set on the water from this beautiful, industrial winery. We love to order flights and watch the ferry come in!
The Kon-Tiki
Owned by colleagues of Mike, we hit the Kon-Tiki on the reg. This tiki bar is intimate and offers the best selection of rums. Sip on a neat Diplomatico like Mike or dive in the deep end with a Zombie like Melissa.
Sobo Ramen
The Bay is full of excellent ramen, but Sobo is our go-to. Maybe its the trendy ambiance coupled with the Frank Sinatra radio?
Enssaro Ethiopian Restaurant
Our favourite Ethiopian place, where we've gone for most of our "big occasion" dates! Try the sega wot (Melissa's fave, beef stew) or yebeg tibs (sauteed lamb, Mike's go-to).
Joaquin Miller Park
Redwoods, right in our backyard! Several easy, flat trails for walking or more intense hikes!
San Francisco
We kept the recommendations to the East Bay, but if you want to travel to San Francisco there are many, many more places to check out: The Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, Ghiardelli Square, the Ferry Building, the Painted Ladies, Ocean Beach, the Presidio, and SF MOMO, just to name a few! We especially suggest hitting Japantown (start at the mall and work outwards), or our favourite - Smuggler's Cove (a "secret", three-story, pirate-themed tiki bar).
