Question

How do we get to Mexico City?

Answer

Flying to Mexico City can be very inexpensive. If you are coming from the east coast, airlines like Frontier and Volaris provide inexpensive flight options with common layovers in Atlanta, Houston or Dallas. If you're traveling from North Carolina, there are always economical flights leaving from GSP (Greenville Spartanburg), RDU (Raleigh/Durham), ATL (Atlanta) and CLT (Charlotte). If you are flying from the West Coast, there are many inexpensive options out of California.

Question

When we arrive in Mexico City, how do we navigate through the city?

Answer

The best way for you to navigate the city is Uber, Lyft and Beat. Taxis leaving from the airport will charge higher prices and will be less reliable. When traveling in Uber, always confirm the license plate number before entering the vehicle and confirm the name of the driver (they will ask for your name as well) and follow along with your route with the app or any other navigation app such as Waze or Google maps.

Question

How do we find accommodations in Mexico City?

Answer

Mexico City is very large and has many beautiful and inexpensive options for accommodations. The recommended areas for guest accommodations will be Centro de Coyoacán and Insurgentes Sur. We recommend that guests search in these areas on Airbnb or Sea City Express. Should you want any advice on your options, please let us know.

Question

What precautions should we take with food and water in Mexico City?

Answer

The food in Mexico is delicious! We recommend not eating anything from street stands or kiosks unless you feel confident that the food has been handled and cooked properly. Mexico City's standards of food that is "not spicy" is different than most US standards. Proceed with caution, haha! Many people in the city don't drink the water and normally accommodations will provide a "garrafón" which is a large water container used in office water coolers or stations. To be sure, you can ask for bottled water at any restaurant and if you are unsure about the tap water where you are staying, you can use bottled water to brush your teeth and rinse your toothbrush. Try to avoid getting water in your mouth while showering.

Question

How many days should we plan to be in Mexico City?

Answer

As the wedding is on a Saturday, we recommend that non-wedding party guests travel to the city on the 16th at the latest in order to avoid any travel complications and to provide time to settle in before the festivities begin! Your stay can be as long as your schedule allows. Mexico City is an amazing place to explore and we hope everyone gets the opportunity to spend some time touring around.

Question

Should we exchange money ahead of time?

Answer

Depending on your bank, it is usually less expensive to withdraw money from a Banamex or Citibanamex "cajero" (ATM). We recommend exchanging a few dollars ahead of time should you feel more secure arriving with cash in hand but the Mexico City airport has several areas with multiple ATMs and withdrawing cash upon arrival shouldn't be an issue.

Question

What areas should we avoid?

Answer

As with every large city, Mexico City has a few areas to avoid. Please consult the suggested touring spots and, should you have any doubts, please don't hesitate ask Obed, Claudia or Victoria!

Question

If we don't speak Spanish, will we be able to communicate?

Answer

In the more touristic areas of the city, many people have varying levels of English proficiency. Should you like to go eat a meal somewhere where you are likely to have an English-speaking waiter or waitress, we suggest the Condesa and Roma Norte neighborhoods. If you want to travel around the city but don't feel comfortable with your level of Spanish proficiency, please let us know and we can arrange some group excursions!

Question

What is the Mexico City airport like?

Answer

Upon arrival in the Mexico City airport, you will be sent through several hallways to customs and immigration. Immigration will either offer you a kiosk to fill out your travel information or you will be asked to fill out a paper form and hand it over to the Immigration officer. The officer will ask you why you are traveling to Mexico, how long you will be in the country, and they will want the address of your accommodations. All immigrations officers will be able to communicate with you in English. From immigration, you will walk through more hallways and arrive at baggage claim. You will claim any checked luggage from the conveyer and then take your customs declaration form to the officers standing near the exits. If you have nothing to declare, then you should be ushered to the exit.

Question

What about visas?

Answer

For U.S. and Canadians guests, tourist visas are given upon arrival or during the flight at no extra cost. You will need to have a valid passport and the address for where you will be staying for the weekend. It is important to bring an address written down somewhere on you because more than likely you wont have internet to check while passing through customs. Message us with any questions!

Question

How do we get Passports?

Answer

Here is the website for U.S. passports: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports.html If you are planning on traveling to Mexico for the wedding, please get your passports as soon as possible. Each state takes a different amount of time to process new passports or renewal, but the normal is 8 weeks.

Question

Is it possible to buy my flight before I have my passport?

Answer

Yes, but you will need to enter in your passport information when you check into you flight or to board the plane. However, if you find a fire deal on tickets, you can buy your flight before actually having the physical copy of the passport. Please keep in mind that it can take up to 8 weeks to get your physical passports or you pay extra to have it expedited.
