The Engagement

04.26.2024

We have done A LOT of puzzles during the course of our relationship… and Chris has a personal policy to (almost) never look at the box. I have now taken up that habit as well. So it wasn’t all that surprising or suspicious when Chris brought a new puzzle over for us to do. I got a little suspicious however, when he would not let me see what it was of. I could tell it was a personalized puzzle, and had the briefest thought that maybe it was some kind of proposal. However, shortly into sorting the pieces, those thoughts were dissuaded as I realized that it was no such thing. After some more sorting and thinking, I found it was a sweet puzzle he had order with a picture of us from our vacation this past February. Any disappointment about the lack of proposal was pushed from my mind, and I was thoroughly enjoying the sweet gift from my best friend and time spent with him. As we were making progress on the puzzle, it became evident that a piece was missing. I had knocked multiple pieces off the table throughout the evening, and I was being to worry I had lost it, or the dog had eaten it, or it had just come with a piece missing. We look ed around a bit, but decided to push on to the end, and if it was still missing we would try to find it. Sure enough, we get to the end and a lone piece is missing. We begin our search, we used phone flashlights to search the floor, I was on my hands and knees looking under the dishwasher, we moved all the chairs, it was nowhere to be found. I then search the hallways, wondering if the dog or my sweatshirt sleeve had caused it’s migration. Nothing. On my way back to the kitchen, Chris exclaims that he has found it, claiming “it was right over here”, near where he had been sitting. I excitedly entered the kitchen to find him holding the missing piece! Hooray! He asks if I would like to do the honors of putting it in. I told him he should be the one, since he found it. I knew this will be to no avail, because he always INSISTS that I do the last piece. So, I decided not to put up a fight and just put in the last piece. I walk over and he hands me the piece, backing side up. I turn to put the piece into the puzzle with Chris standing behind me. As I flip it the correct direction, I see in the small little letters on the small little piece, it reads: “Will you marry me?” In shock, I quickly turn back around to see Chris on one knee, holding a ring. I stuttered out a yes, and repeated myself quite a few time. Honestly, the next few minutes are a little fuzzy, but I know that Chris put the ring on my finger and stood up and gave me one of my most favorite hugs I have ever been given. Sooner or later I remembered to put the last puzzle piece in…. We took some pictures, told our families, smiled a lot, and finally had to say goodbye for the night, since Chris has an hour drive and work the next morning. It could not have imagined a more sweet and wonderful proposal. It was so thoughtful and well planned out and was a perfect fit for our relationship. I was so surprised and caught off guard, which was a top priority for Chris. I am so so excited to marry my best friend. -Kayla
