Walking Tour
Wednesday, 8th of August We are going to do a walking tour in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Quito sits at an elevation of 2,850 meters above sea level and is the second-highest capital city in the world. It is also the second most populous city in Ecuador, after Guayaquil (where I was born). The historic center of Quito has one of the largest, least-altered and best-preserved historic centers in the Americas. One of the first World Cultural Heritage Sites declared by UNESCO, in 1978.
Tour to some of our indigenous Towns
Thursday, 9th of August Otavalo is about an hour north of Quito. The indigenous Otavalo people are famous for weaving textiles, usually made of wool, which are sold at the famous market. Here you can purchase beautifully handwoven blankets, tablecloths, and much more. It has a population largely made up of the Otavalo indigenous group and is surrounded by the peaks of Imbabura (4,630 metres). We are also visiting Cotacachi which is considered the "Leather Capital of Ecuador" and also has some amazing stores. This city holds a UNESCO medal for being free of illiteracy. Surrounding Cotacashi and Otavalo are beautiful lakes which we'll also visit along route.
Tour
Friday, 10th of August This is our first tour visit. You get to stand on the Equator and jump between the Northern and Southern hemisphere, Latitude 0. The placement of the equatorial line was defined during a 1736 expedition called the French Geodesic Mission. We'll visit some monuments and museums around the site and do some experiments!
