Renting a car while you're here depends on what your plans are and where you'll be staying. We'll try to break into two trains of thought. If you're planning to come in a few days early and want to sight see, a rental car may be a good thing as you'll need a car to get to bigger attractions like Mt. Hood, Multnomah Falls, the wine country or coast. Now, if you're basically coming in for the weekend and plan to take in a lot of the local happenings, then you might not really need a rental car. Once you land PDX, you can take a train into downtown, Uber or Lyft or taxi. Once you're in town you can easily walk, use the Nike Town bike system or use Uber / Lyft. You can also just rent a car for a day or two if you need and then drop it off. Call us if you need more advice!

Let’s talk a little about how Portland works which will help you decide where you want to stay in the city. Portland is broken into 4 quadrants or neighborhood – Northwest, Southwest, Northeast and Southeast. The hard part is they all offer something unique and special. And while the wedding is in our Northwest neighborhood, you’ll find it easy to get to the other neighborhoods to explore. Portlanders love visiting all the neighborhoods for food, bars, and window shopping. Northwest and Southwest (Downtown) have a lot happening and both offer great places to stay. We’re going to talk about a several options of accommodation levels. There’s something here for everyone in terms of a place to stay. So, we don’t have a preferred hotel at this time. Hotels here are unique and fun! As we started to try to lock in some hotels, it just didn’t make sense. We felt we would take part of the experience away by not letting you explore and choose a place that fit who you are and your needs.

THE NINES HOTEL. It’s been voted one of the best hotels in the world by one of the big travel magazines. All the sports teams, people of notoriety like the Nines. They have two wonderful restaurants, beautiful rooms and service and are located right in the heart of downtown (SW). Ask anyone where a nice place to stay in Portland and you’ll hear the Nines every time. Other places we think fall into this category and are all located downtown: The Benson, Hotel Lucia ( Chic, in a 1909 landmark), The Monaco, The Heathman ( Swanky in a 1927 landmark) and one we really, really like because of the restaurant, The Paramount!

THE JUPITER HOTEL. If you love hipsters as much as we Portlanders do and want to get stuck in, then the Jupiter Hotel is for you! It’s on East Burnside and right in the mixer with all the crazy, rude, ironic hipters. It boasts a restaurant and famous music venue called the Doug Fir (where you can find Rafael on many nights). Many artists you might know like the Decemberists, Kings of Leon, Adele, Afghan Whigs, etc. have played there.

You know who you are and we love you for it. Boutique hotels here are cool and make for great experiences. We’re not short on them. Here are a few we like: HOTEL MODERA – Downtown, beautiful set up, fun restaurant. KIMPTON HOTEL VINTAGE – Hip, upscale hotel with good Italian dining. INN AT NORTHRUP STATION – Your basic boutique. We like that it’s in the heart of the NW neighborhood, close where we live, where the wedding party will be close to all fun things in every direction. ACE HOTEL – world famous hipster / “boutiquee mee” accommodation. It started in Portland and THEN opened in NYC and London. It has a Stumptown Coffee in the lobby and literally in the center of some the funnest places to shop, eat, walk around and see music. Just off West Burnside in downtown and right across from the Pearl District. KIMPTON RIVERPLACE HOTEL – Refined, waterfront hotel with dining.

Yeah, yeah, we get it. We like it that way too. If you have points for free nights, you should be able to use them here. All of your favorite franchises are here. You’ll find Marriott and Hilton options (Canopy in the Pearl District is a brand new hotel that looks pretty cool). Google Map search away and remember we recommend staying closer to the northern part of downtown and the Pearl District (NW).
Travel Note
Totally cool and pretty smart too. We think the Holiday Inn NW and the Silver Cloud might be really good and reasonable options. We also like that they are both right around the corner from our house, the start of 23rd Ave, breweries, bars, restaurants, distilleries, shopping, etc. They’re also really close the wedding venue too!
