Flight

Advice on Airline Travel

You will be flying into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. We highly suggest an itinerary that connects you through either Paris (Charles De Gaulle) or Amsterdam (Airport Schiphol) for your journey to Kenya. Allowing 2 hours or more in-between arrival and departure will be an stress-saver to make sure you do not miss your connecting flight and can get around those airports and/or go through additional customs.

Travel Note

Ubers

In Nairobi, Ubers are available to use, and payment through the app is accepted. More often than not, drivers will ask you to pay off of the app when the ride is completed. They will charge you the same rate, and likely ask for a tip. This method of paying would be done through MPESA with a Kenyan number. This is a more difficult way for foreigners to to pay if staying short term. However, if you decide to stay in Kenya for a while, this option of payment may be worth exploring for other instances.

Travel Note

Shuttles/Buses = Matatus

Shuttles/Buses in Kenya are called Matatus. They require exact physical payment and have routes printed on the side of the bus that corresponds to the line you need to take. This method of travel is a bit more complicated for tourists, but could be a good option in shorter distance traveling (into, around, and out of the city) without suitcases or extra bags if you are feeling adventurous.
