Question

Let's talk money

Answer

What is the currency? How do I pay for things? What is MPESA, and do I need it? The currency in Kenya is the Kenyan Shilling (KES) with a conversion rate of 1 USD -> 129 KES. There are three popular ways to pay for goods/services in Kenya. 1. MPESA MPESA is a mobile money service that lets people send, receive, store, and spend money using their mobile phones without needing a traditional bank account. It is run by Safaricom, and requires a Kenyan phone number/account with the company. Once the phone number/account is obtained, you deposit cash within an agent from a local Safaricom shop or kiosk, and the money is stored digitally in your phone account. You then send it to someone else via SMS or app. This is the #1 way to pay throughout Kenya. Whether you're going to eat a restaurant, seeing a movie, or going grocery shopping MPESA is used everywhere. This method of payment is HIGHLY recommended if staying long-term especially in/around the city. 2. Credit Cards Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets. However, not all business will take payment in credit card, so do not rely solely on this option of payment. 3. Cash Cash will be your favorite method of payment if you do not wish to make a Safaricom account and obtain a Kenyan phone number. Cash is widely accepted, and highly recommended to carry with you throughout your trip.
