Explore the Ribeira District
This historic district by the Douro River is a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its picturesque streets, colourful houses, and riverside cafes. It’s a perfect place for a leisurely walk or a meal with a view of the river and the Dom Luís I Bridge.
Take a Tour of the Port Wine Cellars
Porto is famous for its Port wine, and there are many wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river, where you can take a tour and enjoy tastings. Popular options include Graham’s, Sandeman, and Taylor’s. Don't forget to try the famous Portuguese pairing of Port wine with cheese or chocolate!
Visit the São Bento Railway Station
This historic train station is famous for its beautiful azulejo (blue and white tile) panels that depict scenes from Portuguese history. It’s a quick visit but worth seeing for its artistic and cultural significance.
Cruise the Douro River
Take a boat cruise along the Douro River to see Porto from a different perspective. Many tours are available, from shorter 1-hour trips to full-day excursions that venture into the Douro Valley, famous for its vineyards.
Mercado do Bolhão
Mercado do Bolhão is one of Porto’s most iconic markets, recently renovated but still preserving its traditional charm. Wander through the stalls filled with fresh produce, local meats, cheeses, and seafood, or pick up some traditional Portuguese delicacies to take home.
