How We Met

In the summer of 2015 I left the city and moved upstate to a little house on top of Ohayo Mountain, just south of Woodstock. I had trees, fresh air, quiet, a yard to mow, and a wood stove to light at night. I made some new friends. I was golfing again. I would soon watch the Chicago Cubs win a World Series. Life was good. Except... I was a single man. Living alone on top of a mountain outside of a town of 5,000 people. Clearly I had not thought this through. Thankfully my friends Justin & Amy intervened, put their heads together and thought about who they knew that was single. They batted about a dozen names back and forth before landing on "Catherine... I could actually see that." .... Our first date was Jan 28, 2017 in Brooklyn... we made plans to meet at Grand Army Plaza to go for a walk through Prospect Park. The first time I saw Catherine was when she stepped onto a crowded 2 train at Nevins Street. She was beautiful. Though we'd been emailing for a couple of weeks, I couldn't imagine approaching her, so I laid low and managed to keep out of sight until the train got to Grand Army. I let her walk ahead of me and then caught up - acting as though I'd just arrived from elsewhere.  Catherine had Henry the following weekend, so we had to wait two weeks for our 2nd date... I wanted to make sure I guaranteed myself a 3rd date, so I did what anyone in my position would do: I emailed Alec Baldwin to ask if he could put me on the guest list for Saturday Night Live. I laid all my cards on the table and explained to Alec that "I have the most noble of intentions: I'm trying to impress a woman." He responded immediately.  This remains the coolest thing I have ever done in my life. That night at Rockefeller Center I gave Catherine fair warning that I had definitely peaked early - and that our burgeoning relationship was unlikely to get much better than that moment. It turned out I was wrong. Brian
