Located in an old orange farm, a fruit that was exported in large quantities during the 19th century, the Augusto Arruda Pineapple Plantation is now recognized as a must-see destination on S. Miguel island. After the end of the Second World War, the plantation progressively focused on tourism, while being careful to preserve traditional production methods. Today, the Augusto Arruda Pineapple Plantation, which is now owned by the 3rd generation of the founder’s family, is a major tourist attraction in the Azores and one of the most visited places on S. Miguel island.
The 16th-century Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz dates back to 1522, was rebuilt in 1764 and frequently restored over the centuries. According to tradition, the Chapel was built where a shepherd found an image of Our Lady, in a cave.
