How We Met

Short story: Online. Long story: Six times over 2 years.

The 1st time Caroline and Luis met was in 2013, when Caroline was in her Improv 101 graduation show at UCB. Their mutual friend, Matt, was also in the show. Luis remembered Caroline because she made him laugh. She doesn't remember meeting Luis at all. The 2nd time was in 2014, also at UCB. Matt and Luis were attending a show at midnight, and Caroline was there with another friend. This time Caroline vaguely remembered Matt's friend and that she liked his glasses, but little else -- it was way past her bedtime. Luis again remembered Caroline. The 3rd time was a near-miss in March 2015 -- Caroline celebrated her birthday at The Dresden in Los Feliz, which was blocks from where Luis was living. Matt invited him along, but Luis didn't want to party crash. He had no idea it was Caroline's party. The 4th time (or times!) was between April-July 2015. Caroline was working at a small VFX company in the SBE building in Mid-Wilshire in Los Angeles across the street from LACMA, and Luis was working at Sundance, in the same building (he was on the 6th floor, she was on the 26th). They'd take their lunch breaks yards away from each other and never knew. The 5th time was summer 2015. Caroline attended Sundance's Next Fest with friends in LA after she got free tickets from her uncle who worked for Sundance's Utah office (thanks, Uncle Keith!). Luis was working behind the camera at both events. He remembered Caroline from editing the footage. 6th time was a charm -- on November 15, 2015, they had their first date after talking briefly online. Before Caroline left for the date, Matt texted her a picture dressed as a character dubbed "the #1 LA Sparks fan" shot at the Korean Friendship Bell in San Pedro. Within 5 minutes of meeting, Luis mentioned helping his comedian friend with a photo shoot in San Pedro the day before. Before he could say "LA Sparks," Caroline showed him the photo Matt sent her -- he confirmed that he had taken the photo. The rest was history!

The Proposal

Secret Stairways...and Surprise Proposals

Caroline and Luis love going on secret stair walks to see hidden areas of LA. For those who haven't heard of them, these are guided walks through hilly neighborhoods of LA through public stairways that, in the days before cars, helped people who live in homes built high above the hills to get up and down to main roads. Nowadays many of these homes are extremely beautiful as the confusing, circuitous pathways to get to them make them ideal locations for the rich and/or famous to make their homes. On March 31, 2019, they went on a secret stair walk in Silver Lake. Luis was waiting for a spectacular view of Los Angeles to pop the question at, but this particular walk was rather mundane and definitely confusing. They got lost several times. It was their first ever "bum stair walk." At one point, Luis said to hold on a second after passing a set of stairs they'd already gone up. Caroline came around the corner and caught Luis in the middle of kneeling and taking something out of his pocket. Caught unprepared, he blurted out, "You wanna get married?" After realizing that Luis was not, in fact, in danger of tripping over and asking "are you serious?!" several times, Caroline happily accepted. From then on, it was no longer a bum stair walk!
