Remember, this is a rugged, remote, and dry area. Plan ahead and be aware of potential hazards. Your safety is your responsibility. Be prepared and know your limits. • Trails? There are very few marked and maintained routes Keep yourself oriented. • Cell phone service is unreliable, or non-existent. • Take maps, food, proper shoes and clothing, and at least 4 liters of water per person, per day. • Road conditions change rapidly. High clearance or 4WD may be required and is recommended. • Summer temperatures in the desert can be lethal. Avoid hiking in the heat. • Flash floods are a significant danger. Do not enter canyons if rain threatens. Dangerous thunderstorms often produce torrential rain that leads to flash floods, sometimes miles away from the storm. • Respect wildlife. This is their home. • Soil crust is alive and should not be trampled. • No collecting of anything. Please abide by Leave No Trace ethics.
The Escalante Interagency Visitor Center will provide in-person services from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm Sunday, Monday and Thursday through Saturday. The facility is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, and indoor visitor capacity is limited to 10 or less at all times.
