Please arrive between 7:30 and 8:00, as the entire party needs to be present in order to be seated. It's not just for Lent! A Friday night fish fry is a long-standing, year-round Wisconsin tradition. When Catholic immigrants (primarily Irish, Polish, and Germans) settled in Wisconsin, this practice came with them. During Prohibition, taverns – which could no longer sell the products that kept them in business– turned to serving food to keep the doors open (and perhaps sneak a few pints under the table). Fish was abundant and cheap, and frying didn’t exactly require cooking school. Restaurants and supper clubs long ago joined the taverns, but you can also find fish fries in church basements and VFW halls. And though some establishments offer fish fries on other days of the week, it takes away from the charm of a community event. Fish fries come in all sorts, but Lake Wisconsin Country Club's is exclusively haddock. Beer-battered, baked, seasoned or not.

The Free Congregation (Freie Gemeinde) of Sauk County was established at Sauk City in 1852 by a group of German Freethinkers who left Germany after the failure of the liberal revolution of 1848, seeking freedom to practice their belief in the ability of humans to reason for themselves without interference from governmental and religious authorities. It is today the only remaining Freie Gemeinde in the United States, having survived in part by merging—in its own distinct manner—with the Unitarians. Sauk City native and architect, Alfred Claus, designed this meeting hall for the congregation. Erected in 1884, Park Hall stands today as memorial and landmark to German immigrants who sought political and religious freedom. Now over a century old, Park Hall enjoys national, state, and county historic site status, and continues to serve the purpose for which it was built: a meeting place for free thinkers.

Wollersheim Winery, the second oldest winery in the US, sits on a scenic hillside across the Wisconsin River from Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. In the 1840s, the Hungarian nobleman Agoston Haraszthy discovered the sloped land where the winery sits today, and planted it with grapevines. During his short time in Wisconsin, Haraszthy also incorporated the state’s first town, Sauk City. In December of 1849, he followed the gold rush to California, where he also had a hand in developing the state’s wine industry. In 1972, the Wollersheims bought the farm to restore it to a working winery. They planted the hills with grapevines, furnished the limestone cellars with oak barrels and converted the old carriage house into a store. Tours last about 1 hour and the price is $8 which includes tastings of featured wines at no charge. Additional wines may be tasted for a small fee.
