In order to explore the gorgeoso island, here are some suggestions located in Friday Harbor: - Susie's Mopeds: Offers a variety of rentals including mopeds, go carts & lil red buggies. - Wildlife Cycles: Mountain bikes, cruisers, and electric bikes. They also provide helmets, locks, and maps to help you navigate the island. - San Juan Island Outfitters: Offers bike rentals along with kayak rentals and guided tours. They have a selection of hybrid bikes and electric bikes for rent. - Jolly Trolley: Offers a hop on hop off day pass that has stops all over the island.
Downtown Friday Harbor has tons of delicious restaurants & shops to peruse. Our favorites are Downriggers, Friday's Crabhouse, Tenth House & San Juan Island Brewery. Friday Harbor is also the best place to rent any bikes, catch the Jolly Trolley or a buggie/moped!
Roche Harbor is a quaint little town with lots of character. Here you can check out Hotel De Haro or go grab a "Fluffy Duck" at the Madrone Restaurant on the water or a delicious burger or world class clam chowder at the Lime Kiln Cafe. Roche Harbor is a particularly special spot to the Thorps as it is where they keep their boat to get back and forth from Pearl Island where their house is. Pearl island is only about a quarter mile long with no way to get there besides boat. Kayaks are available to rent in Roche and you can paddle over and spot the Thorp house on Pearl & Washington's smallest State Park - Posey Island.
Whenever we bike around the island, we have to stop and say hi to the alpacas! They are always so friendly & funny & the farm is gorgeous. Right up the hill, there is a scenic quick hike that also gives you a great view of the islands, Canada and even a glimpse of Pearl Island (where the Thorp's home is).
If you want to see some Orcas, this is your spot! Orcas travel frequently along the channel between Canada & San Juan Island and Lime Kiln has deep water very close to the shore. When Emily was there in 2017 she was once within 30 feet of a pod of Orcas! It is a lovely spot to bring a picnic to, enjoy the sun & spot some whales!
The "peak of purpleness" is in the summer at the lavender farm! So if you want to stop by and see the lavender fields and shop it is right off the main road around the island.
Riding out to Cattle Point offers an unreal look at Olympic National Park & the Puget Sound. There are also some beautiful bluff walks & a lighthouse. If you are going to rent bikes to go around the island, Emily would like to make you aware of the giant hill at the end of the peninsula but Mitchell says "Lets go Aggies, get after it Peloton!"
