South Florida’s interior is one of the largest protected tropical wetland areas in the world; we’ve seen lots of gators, a range of birds, manatees, crocodiles etc. The deafening airboat tours are popular but there are lots of walking trails accessible by car that permit a more thoughtful and immersive experience.
For those of you who don’t burn to a crisp in the sun, Biscayne is a spectacular protected marine environment just outside the city. Above water you can go paddle boarding and see mangrove forests, natural beaches and plenty of bird; go driving or snorkeling and below water you can see reefs, dolphins, turtles and other marine life.
