Presque Isle State Park
Presque Isle State Park Pennsylvania's most visited state park, and it's easy to see why. Presque Isle features 11 beautiful beaches — Beach 6 is the most popular — along with a paved two-lane trail perfect for walking, running, rollerblading, and biking. Within the park you'll also find bike rentals and water rentals including canoes and kayaks to explore the scenic lagoons. Highly recommended for any outdoor enthusiast!
Lake Erie Wine Country
Lake Erie Wine Country North East, PA is home to 15 wineries along the Lake Erie Wine Country Trail, with an additional 7 just across the border in New York State — giving you over 20 wineries to explore in the region. The closest wineries are only about a 15–20 minute drive from downtown Erie, making for a great afternoon outing.
Ohio Wine Country – Vines & Wines Wine Trail
Just across the Pennsylvania border in northeast Ohio lies one of the most impressive wine regions in the country — with more wineries per square mile than any other region in the state. The Vines & Wines Wine Trail winds through the Grand River Valley along the southern shore of Lake Erie, offering dozens of award-winning wineries set among rolling vineyards and scenic lake views. Standout varietals in the region include Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Franc. A local highlight is Ferrante Winery & Ristorante in Geneva, OH — one of Ohio's largest family-owned wineries, featuring award-winning wines and a full-service Italian restaurant. If you're flying into Cleveland (CLE), this wine country is right along your route on I-90 East — making it a perfect stop on the way to Erie!
Oil Creek State Park
Think oil was first discovered in Texas? Think again! The birthplace of the American petroleum industry is actually right here in Titusville, PA — just 45 minutes southeast of Erie — in what is now Oil Creek State Park. The park features a fascinating museum that takes you back to the mid-1800s oil boom era, along with dozens of miles of challenging trails for hiking and biking, and breathtaking scenic overlooks of a valley that was once completely transformed by the oil rush. A must-visit for history buffs and outdoor adventurers alike.
Moraine State Park
Located near the crossroads of I-79 and I-80 in western Pennsylvania, Moraine State Park is a perfect stop for guests driving up from Pittsburgh (PIT) — it's right along your route on I-79 North. The centerpiece of the park is the stunning 3,225-acre Lake Arthur, featuring 42 miles of shoreline and a wide range of outdoor activities. Whether you're into boating, kayaking, hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, or simply taking in the scenery, Moraine has something for everyone. Bike and watercraft rentals are available on-site, and the park also offers scenic pontoon boat tours of the lake during the summer. Panama Rocks
About a 45-minute drive from Erie, Panama Rocks is a stunning natural attraction featuring hiking trails through ancient geological formations — towering quartz conglomerate sedimentary rock that stretches nearly half a mile and reaches up to 60 feet tall. Carved by glaciers over 300 million years ago, the formations wind through deep crevices, narrow passageways, and cool cavernous dens. A truly unique experience for anyone who loves nature and the outdoors. Note: There is an admission fee of $10/adult, $8/child (6-12), 5 & under are free
Waldameer & Water World
A great option for beating the summer heat! Waldameer offers more than 100 rides, slides, and attractions, plus Water World — a full water park featuring a half-million gallon wave pool and plenty of wet and wild fun. Unlike most major amusement parks, outside of major holidays, parking and park admission are free, so you only pay for the rides you want.
