September 30, 2023 was a cool morning when Brandon and Brooklyn (driving separately) headed to a rock quarry in Atlantic, Iowa, ready to earn their open-water scuba diving certifications. Brandon had his sights set on a long-anticipated winter trip to New Zealand, where he planned to dive with friends. Brooklyn was preparing for a year working in Israel and was looking forward to spending her weekends diving in the Mediterranean. As the small group arrived and began setting up their gear, the instructor, Kevin, walked over to Brandon and Brooklyn and asked if they were comfortable being dive buddies. The other two participants were married—and therefore lifelong buddies. Brandon and Brooklyn looked at each other, said, “Alright, buddy,” sealed it with a high five, and promptly zipped each other into 9mm wetsuits. Little did Kevin know, he had just played matchmaker.
