It was a singles dinner! Most of the night Caitlin avoided everyone but friends and Kevin avoided eye contact because he was so ridiculously taken by her blue eyes (thanks Dad!). Over Korean BBQ we all ate and enjoyed little get-to-know-you questions. At the end of the night Caitlin left feeling it was a success of being with friends and Kevin wasn't sure what to do.
Kevin drafted the email a few dozen times and finally hit send. The fact that a guy she'd shown no interest in had the guts to ask her for a coffee meant something, so Caitlin accepted. Caitlin was struck by his thoughts about art, diverse reading interests, and how he was thoughtful about his faith. Kevin left the date and wondered around Midtown, totally distracted by this girl.
This is hands-down our favorite date to reference. It was our third time together and it ended up being a marathon date. Kevin met Caitlin at the office to "help" study Hebrew. After "studying," aka Kevin distracting and Caitlin struggling to teach him even the Hebrew alphabet, they headed out to the Met. Art is our love language but we didn't know it yet. Caitlin was nervous and skeptical. Growing up around art means thoroughly enjoying every piece, not rushing through. Could Kevin really match that? He did. Kevin didn't hover, knew about artists and Caitlin the same. It was great. The cherry on top was when Kevin showed her the visible storage. It was like finding treasure—we highly recommend! After the Met date we've had a lot of other experiences together and have seen a lot of art but that was the day that we knew something was going to be significant about this other person.
Kevin hatched the plan over drinks with Brad. Sam texted the group about a weekend in the Catskills and soon enough Caitlin was thinking that this was just a weekend with some of her favorite people in a beautiful setting. On that Friday, we're sitting in the rental car still in NYC. Sam and Caitlin are studying for a midterm that's due at midnight, Kimberly is wondering if their daughter is sick, Kevin hasn't arrived from work. We scramble for food, Eloise is taken to medexpress, prescribed an antibiotic, and Kevin finally arrives. Somehow we make it to the Catskills, take the exam and are ready for a great weekend together. The next morning most of us hike and then the Chappells arrive! It's the best. Caitlin is trying to convince everyone to go for another round of hiking, the boys are passing around the ring as to not be discovered, and Kevin is researching best romantic hikes. Caitlin has no idea and just wants everyone to be together. Of course, everyone graciously declines and Caitlin and Kevin head out. There's a block on the road but after an hour detour we hit the trailhead and Caitlin is off hiking hard. After a stop in the woods where she exclaims she'd peed on herself, they continue along. She's still oblivious to what Kevin is trying to accomplish. Finally, Kevin draws her off the trail and starts in on the questions. After Kevin's brief interrogation, Caitlin realizes what's happening—THIS IS IT! He asks, she laughs, cries, and jumps up and down all at the same time. Caitlin can't believe it. Kevin is so relieved to not have to hide things anymore. We get back to the cabin and our dear friends and their babies are waiting for us with snackies and champagne. The next morning we prayed, worshiped, and read scripture. This was Caitlin's dream proposal and Kevin didn't even know. Note: Milla Chappell is a fantastic woman, mom, friend and photographer.
