Britton and Joseph met on their very first day of Memphis NROTC orientation, unknowingly beginning a story that would shape their entire college experience. From the start of freshman year, they became part of a close-knit friend group that quickly felt like family. During those early months, Joseph was often the one behind the wheel, driving everyone from place to place as they made memories together. On one of their first group outings, Joseph decided to play country music and, with a teasing smile, looked directly at Britton and said, “The California girl will be the only one who won’t know this.” Without missing a beat, Britton looked right back at him—and proved him completely wrong. She was the only one in the car who knew every single word, singing it back with confidence. It was a small moment, but one neither of them would forget. As the year went on, their friendship grew within the group. Starting college during the COVID pandemic meant they had to get creative with how they spent time together. By second semester, with a limited “spring break,” the group took short trips to nearby towns, exploring wherever they could. It was during those trips that something between Britton and Joseph began to shift. What had started as friendship slowly deepened into something more. Despite the uncertainty and challenges of that semester, they tried to put their feelings on pause—but that only lasted about a week. On Britton’s birthday, their friends planned a surprise party. While she was getting ready, Joseph called and casually asked if she had dinner plans. When she said no, he didn’t hesitate: “I’ll pick you up after.” That birthday dinner marked a turning point. Not long after, when Joseph’s birthday came around, Britton returned the gesture by planning a dinner for him. They had just turned 19. From that very first birthday dinner, Britton and Joseph have been inseparable ever since.
