POV: You're Brenna Coleman (very attractive and not at all weird or awkward). It's the spring of 2017. You're 23 and hopelessly addicted to weekly karaoke at a bar in Glendale to cope with the stress of job hunting in a new city. You're deciding with your sister what to sing to the small, but enthusiastic drunk crowd. It could be a Fall Out Boy kind of night. Suddenly, you see him from across the room: a handsome guy with swooshy emo boy hair from 2008. Surely, you're hallucinating—that kind of guy has been extinct for at least five years. But then, he goes on stage with his friend (hi, Patt!) to sing a pop punk song and you realize your culture isn't dead. Your sister sees you seeing him. She makes fun of you because she knows your type. She is correct, but you're in denial. Weeks go by. You've seen these guys at karaoke every Tuesday, but have yet to say anything to them other than "Hell yeah, good job up there." Pretty boys make you nervous. June 13th—your 24th birthday—conveniently falls on karaoke Tuesday. You, your sister, and a group of friends have been singing everything from Queen to music from the Kingdom Hearts games. Emboldened by birthday madness, you decide it's time to finally approach the Karaoke Boys. Their names are Kevin and Patt and they're really nice. Neat. Months go by. You've hung out with these dudes on most Tuesdays and have joined them for other events such as Emo Nite LA and a newer, live band karaoke. Somewhere along the way, you realize you have indeed caught feelings for Kevin. Maybe it's the hair. Maybe it's the fact that he knows enough about Batman to have a favorite Robin. It's October 2017 and you are at a My Chemical Romance-themed Halloween party at a club in Silverlake. Despite you being a sweaty mess after dancing and moshing for hours, Kevin asks you out. Surely, this is a dream. You're being asked out by a guy you like during your favorite time of year while a song ("The Ghost of You," for anyone curious) by your favorite band is playing? Your inner teenager is crying of joy. The night before Halloween, you finish making a costume to wear to work the following day and you are very nervous for your first date with THE Karaoke Kevin. "He's gonna find out that I'm weird," you fear. "He's gonna find out that my room is full of stuffed animals and dorky collectables." Kevin picks you up and takes you to a coffee shop that has a tree inside of it. VERY cool. You also find out he has been editing a trailer for an adaptation of a book you read recently. "Wow, I just read that book recently," you say. He brings you back to his place to watch the movie. It's cute. His apartment also has dorky collectables. In late 2019, you move in together. A few months after that, there's a weird pandemic thing happening and you're trapped together. Luckily, living together rules. It's 2022 and you get a dog. He's the best dog in the world. He might be the best dog in the universe. You're proud parents. It's 2023 and the world has finally calmed down enough for you two to take that Hawaiian vacation you've been wanting to take. Kevin plans the whole thing. "Gee," you think. "I wonder why he's planning a whole day of sightseeing and hiking with a photoshoot at the end." You tell some friends this and you all giggle knowingly. Hawaii happens. Your suspicions are correct. Kevin proposes on a secret black sand beach in Maui and it is genuinely the best day of your entire life. Two years later, you're writing an entire novel about your thoughts and feelings as the wedding day finally approaches. It's corny, but no one judges you because you're so great and talented and nice and pretty and everyone likes you and thinks you're the best. "Wow," they all think. "Brenna is so charming." You smile, knowing you will shatter that image as soon as you trip over your own feet while walking down the aisle. Despite this, you eagerly await the special day.
