For Rocio, growing up near this historic center of Old San Juan is what inspired her to study architecture in college. Go get lost and meander the cobblestone streets of 16th century Spanish architecture. Beautiful colorful buildings full of shops and restaurants. One of the most touristy areas in San Juan but It's a must visit!
At the very tip of Old San Juan, this beautiful historic citadel is a fortress right on the water. Its a great place to visit for water views and you'll enjoy learning about the history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Close by the wedding venue, El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest that is part of the U.S. National Forest System. You can do hikes to beautiful waterfalls for swimming and drive up the mountain to different view points to enjoy the mountains and beach views in the distance. Car required for day trip about 1 hour from San Juan. https://www.discoverpuertorico.com/article/visit-el-yunque-national-forest
Just minutes from San Juan you can find the Afro-Caribbean coastal neighborhood of Piñones. Full of delicious authentic street food, made in the traditional fogón, the many little chinchorros (small dining stands) offer fritters made from plantain, fresh fish, oysters, and a lot of sazón. Best street food. I reccommend coming from Thursday-Sunday when its bustling. Bring cash!
If you are up for an adventure, this is one of our favorite hikes - in a cave! Yes you can hike into a cave. Cueva Ventana, meaning "Window Caves" ends the climb down with a beautiful view of the Arecibo valley. Details on website link on tickets. Car required as day trip.
