We met through a mutual passion for Cosplay and One Piece, coincidentally each dressed as the other's favorite character from the series! Each year, San Antonio holds an anime convention over Labor Day Weekend, appropriately called San Japan. These conventions are a fun opportunity to be creative, buy merchandise, and meet others who share in your fandom. That fateful Saturday, while searching for the scheduled One Piece meetup, Aubrey, dressed as Nami, stepped out of the convention center onto the River Walk. A very in-character Sanji cosplayer, Alexander, upon meeting eyes with her, shouted, "NNNAAAAMMMIIII-SSWWAAANNN!!!" at the top of his lungs. Surprised and amused, she responded with a smile and giggle that melted his heart, and then asked for a selfie together! It has since become a cute memento of they day we met. After chatting, taking more photos, and exchanging information, we were lucky enough to find that we lived in the same city and became quick friends!
Being a seamstress, Aubrey eventually taught Alexander how to sew and make his own cosplays, and he, in turn, helped with hers. We felt a connection that, after a while, bloomed into a love. That Christmas, we discovered our mutual admiration and officially started dating!
Shortly thereafter, we experienced our first "con crunch" together in preparation of Ikkicon, an anime convention held in Austin during the last week of the year. To celebrate the New Year, we debuted our first cosplays as a couple: Sanji/Nami of One Piece and Spike/Faye of Cowboy Bebop. This set the theme for the new year, as we cosplayed many versions of Nami and Sanji together! For the next Ikkicon, after a year of cosplays and conventions together, we prepared another Sanji/Nami cosplay with a skit to enter the cosplay contest. What Aubrey expected to be a normal performance would be the moment Alexander asked her to marry him. 💙 (She said yes!!) 🧡
Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we weren't able to hold the large Renaissance wedding we had planned, and instead had a small magical wedding with our family in East Texas on our originally agreed upon date, 10/10/2020. We are forever grateful for the family and friends that helped us attain the fairytale wedding we wanted, but we're also excited to celebrate again with everyone after a year of isolation!
