Reno is the closest airport to the greater Tahoe area. In the event of poor weather conditions, the mountain passes on the side of the mountains closest to Reno are typically less subject to closures.

Shuttles to and From the Reno - Tahoe airport

There are several shuttles to and from the Reno Airport to the greater Tahoe area. This is a good option since taxis and uber are available around Tahoe and Truckee, a rental car is not absolutely necessary. There is also local transportation in the Tahoe/Truckee area known as the "TART" system of buses.

Travel Note About Rental Cars

If you decided to rent a vehicle, please be sure to get tire chains. In the state of California, you are required to have them in your car. The best action is to rent a car with four wheel drive or all-wheel drive, but do also get tire chains as part of your rental. If you use Budget car rental, they do not offer tire chains. There is a Walmart in Reno that you can purchase them, keep the receipt, and return them before you departure.
