After moving to Washington, DC in 2013 for a new job, Barrett initially met Aaron at the office during his first month at work. However, it wasn't until they both joined a gay kickball league that their friendship truly began to blossom. For nearly three years, their friendship grew through kickball games, happy hours, tv nights, and trips near and far. Then, just before Valentine's Day 2017, they realized that their friendship was something greater, and decided to become boyfriends officially.
During a visit to see family in Oahu over the holidays in 2019, Barrett and Aaron took a side trip to Kauai for a few days to themselves. On the second day of the trip, they hiked through the mud and aftermath of a terrible storm in Waimea Canyon State Park. While the hike itself was messy and unpleasant, they were both rewarded with an amazing view at the end of the hike, with the Pacific Ocean and the incredible canyon in front of them. Seeing this view, Barrett popped down on one knee and asked Aaron to marry him. Thankfully, Aaron said yes.
