Rachel had already lived in Seattle for a couple years after matching to Seattle Children's for Residency when Andrew moved there for his residency in Anesthesiology at UW. During his intern year (first year) of residency, Andrew had a month-long rotation at Seattle Children's where we had a stretch of night shifts that fortuitously lined up. On the first shift, we bonded over our mutual love of fantasy books (Rachel was wandering the halls listening to Robert Jordan on audiobook). We continued talking over the next few nights and eventually Andrew asked Rachel out on a date (to a burger and beer joint! Andrew had no idea how ill-fitting a spot that was for his future fiancée). Clearly it went well, because our next date involved a 2.5 hour drive and 7 mile hike in the wilderness. We never stopped hiking together, and after many, many hikes and backpacking trips, we ended up getting engaged at the end of a 6 mile, 3,500 foot climb up Mount Rose on the Olympic Peninsula (see picture below - note that Andrew snuck up that bottle of champagne the whole way)!
