Question

Where should we stay?

Answer

There are so many wonderful accommodation options! From charming Airbnbs to beautiful hotels throughout Florence and the surrounding areas. We highly recommend booking early. In many cases, you can reserve in advance to secure better pricing, and most hotels and Airbnbs offer flexible options such as free cancellation or payment closer to your arrival date. Booking something early is encouraged, as prices tend to increase as the date gets closer. When reserving your stay, please be sure to check for the following: Air Conditioning (AC): Not all European accommodations have AC. Sebastian and I learned this the hard way last year by assuming it was included, and it was not 😅 If AC is important to you, double-check that it is listed. Smoke-Free Property: If you’re sensitive to smoke, be sure to confirm that the hotel or Airbnb is non-smoking. Planning ahead will give you the best options, pricing, and peace of mind.

Question

Travel Tips for Getting Around Italy

Answer

Friends and family, if you’re traveling by train during your stay, we recommend downloading the Italo or Trenitalia apps directly to your phone. These are Italy’s primary high-speed train services and typically offer the best pricing when booked directly. They’re efficient, comfortable, and the easiest way to travel between cities. If you plan to take ferries during your stay (especially along the coast), we recommend using Omio. It’s a trusted platform that makes booking ferry routes simple and convenient. We suggest downloading the apps in advance so everything is easily accessible while traveling.

Question

What’s the nearest airport/train station?

Answer

Florence Airport (FLR) is just 20 minutes from the city center, making it the most convenient option. However, flights into Florence can be more expensive with fewer international routes. Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (FCO), a major international hub, often offers cheaper flights and more airline options. If you fly into Rome, you can take a fast train to Florence in about 1.5 hours, a simple and scenic ride through the countryside. If you choose to fly into Rome, getting to Florence is easy and scenic. High-speed trains like Frecciarossa or Italo run frequently from Roma Termini to Firenze Santa Maria Novella (SMN) and take about 1.5 hours. Tickets can be booked in advance through Trenitalia or Italo, and both offer comfortable, efficient service through the Tuscan countryside. You can also download the Trenitalia and Italo apps on your phone from the App Store for direct and best booking prices.

Question

Do I need a passport or visa?

Answer

Yes, you’ll need a valid passport to travel to Italy. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen Area (which includes Italy). Tourists from the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and most EU countries do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. Always double-check current requirements with your local government or embassy, especially if you're traveling from a country outside the EU or Schengen Area.
