Athens - Things to See

The Acropolis

The Acropolis is the most iconic landmark of Athens and a must-see for any visitor. Perched high above the city, it offers a stunning view of Athens and is home to the famous Parthenon, a temple dedicated to Athena, the city's patron goddess. It’s an opportunity to walk through ancient Greek history and marvel at classical architecture. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site. We would suggest that you to the Acropolis in the morning hours so as to avoid the heat. To ensure you can go on the day you want, we suggest booking your ticket online in advance.

Monastiraki & Flea Market

This vibrant area is known for its bustling flea market, where visitors can find everything from antiques to unique souvenirs. It’s also home to ancient ruins like the Roman Agora and Hadrian’s Library. Monastiraki has a lively atmosphere, perfect for strolling, shopping, and enjoying the mix of ancient and modern Athens.

Syntagma Square & the Changing of the Guard

Syntagma Square is the political heart of Athens, home to the Greek Parliament. The Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is a tribute to fallen soldiers. The change of the guard takes place every hour on the hour. The ceremony is unique, featuring traditional costumes and synchronized movements. The area is also a great starting point for exploring nearby shops and cafes.

Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro)

This all-marble stadium is the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, though its history dates back to ancient times. It’s the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble, and it offers a fascinating glimpse into Greece’s athletic heritage. Visitors can even run a lap on the track!

Mount Lycabettus

Rising 300 meters above sea level, this limestone hill is the highest point in Athens, offering panoramic views of the city and the Aegean Sea. It’s perfect for sunset views, a romantic outing, or a casual hike. There’s also a charming café at the top and a small chapel.

Plaka & Anafiotika

The oldest neighborhood in Athens, Plaka is known for its charming cobblestone streets, traditional Greek tavernas, and neoclassical houses. Anafiotika, a small district within Plaka, has Cycladic-style whitewashed houses that give a feel of a Greek island right in the heart of the city. It’s perfect for wandering around, shopping for souvenirs, and enjoying a meal with a view of the Acropolis.

Tylixto

This is a must try in Athens, best gyros and souvlaki. Gyros are a popular Greek street food featuring seasoned meat (pork, chicken, lamb, or beef) cooked on a vertical rotisserie, thinly sliced, and served in pita bread with tomatoes, onions, and tangy tzatziki sauce. Souvlaki is a popular Greek fast food of small, marinated meat cubes (usually pork, chicken, lamb) grilled on a skewer. So yummy! Line goes quick!

Lukumades

Tim's favorite dessert in all of Greece, Loukoumades!! Bite sized donuts traditionally topped with honey, cinnamon, and nuts. This place has a variety of fillings and toppings including nutella, pistachio cream, chocolate, gelato, and so much more. Located right next to Tylixto.

O Thanasis

Famous for their lamb and beef kebabs! Ranked as one of the most legendary restaurants in the world (#42 by Taste Atlas).

Anefani

We love this place! A beautiful restaurant with incredible greek food in the Plaka neighborhood. Offers outdoor and rooftop seating. Our favorite appetizer is the Baclava feta cheese (wrapped in phyllo pastry and topped with honey and sesame seeds).

Ark - Glyfada

An all day cafe, restaurant and bar located by the water in Glyfada. A lovely place by the water for a nice Freddo espresso or Freddo cappuccino on a hot summer day. They serve brunch on the weekend.

La Linda - Glyfada

A family run bakery from South America to South Athens. Breads and pastries are handmade daily from local ingredients and without added preservatives. They work closely with local suppliers to create a seasonal menu.

It's a Typical Greek taverna with excellent meat, salads, appetizers and pleasant Greek music that accompany the whole atmosphere.

Sardelaki - Glyfada

Very good cuisine of specialties of the sea, in the heart of Glyfada. Fish of course and also super fresh and well-prepared shrimp and squid.

Peri Gis Grocery Bar - Voula

For guests that enjoy a fresh smoothie, this is a must stop. A large selection of really great smoothies to choose from. Their acai bowl is a local favorite.
