Oaxaca is one of the most fascinating destination of the colonial Mexico, this city is located about 300 miles south of Mexico City, enjoys a mild climate and is rich history and culture, the colonial-style architecture. It is best known for its indigenous peoples and cultures, its amazing gastronomy, and its biodiversity. Oaxaca is a vibrant city, enriched with deep culture and beauty. Question

Is there a dress code?

Answer

Dressy casual - We recommend that women avoid high heels as we will be on cobble stone streets, grass, and uneven ground. Wedges, cute sandals, or flats are best!

Question

What time should I arrive at the Religious ceremony?

Answer

The priest is very punctual, so please make sure you are in place minimum 15 minutes before the ceremony begins. Anthony and Vanessa will be arriving separately accompanied by their families.

Question

Where can I find more information on Oaxaca?

Answer

There have been various articles that have published great insight on visiting Oaxaca over the years. Here are two to help prepare you for your trip: https://alittleadrift.com/countries/oaxaca-mexico/ https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/things-to-do-oaxaca-mexico/index.html http://nymag.com/travel/article/oaxaca-mexico-travel-guide.html

Question

What should I wear when sight seeing?

Answer

Wear comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes. We recommend wearing light fabrics during the day and bringing layers for night.

Question

Can I drink the water?

Answer

Like all other regions in Mexico, we advise that you do not drink the water or use water from the tap to brush your teeth. The hotel and all restaurants in the tourist center will serve you bottled water. If in doubt, request "agua embotellada."

Question

What's the local currency?

Answer

Mexican pesos are used in Oaxaca. It is definitely helpful to carry cash and many places are cash only so we recommend you get pesos at the airport or order them from your bank in advance of your visit. However, we would recommend that you check with your bank to make sure your credit card does not charge you fees for foreign usage (most don't these days, but better safe than sorry). Also, many banks still require that you let them know you will be using your credit card in Mexico so they don't block your transactions. For getting some cash, you can get it from your US bank or also at US airports or upon arrival into Mexico City airport. A quick rule of thumb to convert pesos to dollars is move the decimal place to the left one position, then divide the remaining number in half. For example, 200 pesos is roughly 10 dollars. Question

Can I use my debit card to withdraw money from any ATM?

Answer

Yes. However, there may be high foreign transaction fees with withdrawing money. To ensure the ability to withdraw money, look up your associated bank. An example Citibank is Banamex.

Question

Health & Safety Tips

Answer

According to the Center for Disease Control, the state of Oaxaca is a tropical zone and is affected by Zika and mosquito-borne diseases. Oaxaca City is located in a mountainous region, above 5,000 feet in elevation. Of course, reasonable precautions should be taken, including mosquito repellent. The historic tourist center of Oaxaca is very safe. Of course, we encourage you to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Use licensed tour operators, which can/will be coordinated through by the bride and groom. Oaxaca is among a number of locations in Mexico that have experienced decades-long strikes, protests, and clashes between the teachers' unions and government. These clashes are not directed at tourists. Any demonstrations relating are located in the Zocalo - the governmental center of the city. This area is guarded by police.

Question

Do I need a cellphone in Oaxaca?

Answer

We definitely encourage you to check with your carrier what the process is to add international calls/data for your time in Oaxaca. Many US carriers already include Mexico coverage in their standard plans at no additional cost. By having data coverage while you are in Mexico, it will be very easy to navigate around the city using Google Maps. If you are unable to get this, many hotels/restaurants offer Wi-Fi, but we still strongly suggest that at least one person in your party gets a working cellphone while in Mexico.

Question

What if I have food allergies?
