How to find flights

January might be chilly and grey in the USA, but it is anything but in Costa Rica! We want to make sure you find the best deals on flights and know what to expect flying in. I would suggest using google flights and skyscanner to monitor and check flight prices. Right now, roundtrip flights are around $450-$700 into SJO airport. I would suggest booking 3-4 months before the wedding for the best prices. Skyscanner is an app you can download and you can set alerts for flights you are interesting in so you are notified if flight prices change. If you see one drop into the $400s, I would highly suggest booking right then. Wait even a few hours, and you may miss that great price you found! There are several budget airlines such as Spirit, JetBlue and Southwest and you may not find their flight prices on travelocity or other flight checker websites.

Flight

Aeropuerto Juan Santamaria- SJO

Please plan to fly into Aeropuerto Juan Santamaria in San Jose, Costa Rica. The airport code is SJO when booking. Beginning December 1st, vaccination is required for tourists, residents and citizens of Costa Rica to participate in most public life and events. *YOU MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19 AT LEAST 14 DAYS PRIOR TO TRAVEL TO COSTA RICA.* 72 hours before travel, you need to complete the "pase de salud" or "health pass" at https://salud.go.cr . You will receive a QR code that you will present upon arrival at immigration. For all US citizens, you receive a tourist visa upon entry to Costa Rica free of charge. You will need to show proof of a return ticket to the US upon entry and provide the customs agent with the name and location of the place you are staying.

Transportation

We suggest downloading the Uber app and becoming familiar with how to use it. It is the easiest option for safe and affordable transportation in the San Jose area and travel to the hotel. You will need to connect a credit or debit card to your uber account prior to arrival.

Helpful Hints

Most stores and restaurants accept dollars, but they should be small, clean, unmarked and undamaged bills. We recommend using a credit card with no foreign transaction fees as much as possible. You will get a better exchange rate from your bank or credit card company than a local store or restaurant. There is wifi in the airport, but once you leave you will not have cell service unless you opt in to an international plan. You can purchase a local sim card from the Claro phone service stand before taking your bags through the scanner in the airport. For a few dollars, you can get one of these chips and add cell phone data for your time in Costa Rica. If you plan to use Uber, you do need to plan to either opt in to an international phone service plan or buy a sim card from Claro so you have service.
