Because we live on a slope, everything is pretty spread out the “long way” instead of in grids like on the mainland. We do suggest renting a car (TURO is great here) unless you plan on staying at a resort most of the time.
Kona is very touristy and safe! There is a large homeless population on the island so we don’t recommend leaving purses or laptops in your car. If you are in Kona, it isn’t the best idea to walk or run alone after dark.
- Reef safe sunscreen - Sweatshirt for nighttime - Wedding attire - A good time!
Hawaii has a rich and beautiful family-oriented culture. Some random things to know! - “Aloha” is the Hawaiian greeting and means “breath of life”! - A lei is given as a sign of honor, typically for a special occasion. It is considered polite to keep the lei on during the event / in the presence of the one who presented it to you. We don’t throw leis away, but put them back in nature when we’re done with them! - Any local that is older than you is typically addressed as either “Auntie” or “Uncle”. If some kids in our community are around, they will most likely refer to you as the same! :)
