We met in high school. He was the older boy that everyone had a crush on (including me), and I was the quirky younger girl that acted unimpressed. We became close through mutual friends and just clicked. We gave a relationship a try but it was not the right time. We lost contact for a while and when we reconnected he was the one that was interested and I had to make him work a little bit ;-) After I felt that he had worked hard enough, we started dating beginning 2015 in my first year of university and we've been inseparable since.
I made big plans to take Anika on a helicopter ride in the Drakensberg and visit the Kwazulu-Natal coast for a long weekend. All the bookings were already made and I had to wait patiently to see how COVID-19 would affect my plans. When June came, cross border traveling was still not permitted and my plans fell through. I had to think of a new plan. I decided to take her for a hike on the farm she calls her "happy place" – the farm where they keep their horses. Anika's family ensured her nails were done and set up a picnic at the top. My family bought the food and champagne to pack the picnic basket. It was a team effort to trick her into going on the hike without expecting a thing, and it paid off. Afterwards we went to a log cabin in Muldersdrift to let it all sink in. Once again my family was responsible for the food and Anika's sister packed an overnight bag for her. The following day we had a big family lunch where both families joined to celebrate.
