All the signs were there. We were spending Thanksgiving Weekend on Rum Line. Andrew had purchased Filet Mignon and Champagne for dinner (something we never do). Andrew INSISTED that we go on a hike to see the sunset, bringing along the camera. And yet, Vicky had no idea what was coming. We docked at Angel Island on Thanksgiving Day. A few unexpected friends were there for a cruise out. We passed up the opportunity to socialize, and instead hiked up to a lookout at the battery above Pt. Knox. While Andrew set up the camera for a time lapse of "the sunset", Vicky wandered down the hill, just out of frame. We have had many beautiful sunsets together, but this one was extra special. So special, in fact, that Vicky would not pay any attention to Andrew. No matter how hard he tried, he could not get a conversation started because Vicky was too focused on taking pictures. Finally, Andrew just came out and said "there's something I need to ask you," and got down on a knee. That got Vicky's attention. Andrew then very nervously pulled a small box out of his pocket. "Victoria, will you marry me?" She said YES! After some hugs and kisses, and a few tears, we checked the camera. The time lapse captured a beautiful sunset, and our heads in a silhouette. The only sign we had of a proposal was the one frame in which Andrew was missing, because he was on his knee. Vicky suggested that we could try again to get the photo. So Andrew set the camera up again. This time, Vicky knew to stay in frame. With the camera set, Andrew got down on a knee a second time. Being much more relaxed than the first go round, he didn't check the box as he pulled it out of his pocket. He opened the ring box upside down, and the ring fell into the dirt. Luckily, it didn't fall down the hill and into SF Bay! Vicky told Andrew what happened, and he quickly picked the ring up and continued with the proposal. The dirty diamond didn't spoil the weekend. After our very momentous hike, we returned to Rum Line and continued on to Sausalito, where we spent the weekend celebrating our engagement together. We are very thankful to our sailing friends Fred and Noelle, who lent us their slip for the weekend. ~Below is the original (second) proposal picture taken on Nov 24th 2021~
