** Read before heading downtown** Downtown Playa del Carmen is one of our favorite places to visit to eat, drink, shop and explore. I like to describe DT Playa as a mix of Vegas and Fort myers. That being said it still is a Downtown area so it is very important to practice being aware of your surroundings. Playa is known for trying to take advantage of tourists. I've mostly seen this at Bars and restaurants. Alot of places try to add extra drinks or food items and try to add hidden charges under the "propina" section. When you get the receipt make sure they did not add a tip and if they have, check the amount to make sure they didn't put an obnoxious amount. Mexican tipping standard is 10%. If you ask if they added it 9/10 they will lie and say they didn't. CHECK YOUR BILLS. Don't let this scare you from going. It's such an amazing little downtown with amazing food, drinks, art work, entertainment and clubs.
No trip to Playa del Carmen is complete without adding the Riviera Maya's archaeological sites to the itinerary. Located south of the city and one of the most popular in all of Mexico is Tulum, a true architectural gem and the only site built on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. Cobá is another one of the most beautiful archaeological sites in the region that many have yet to discover. It is home to the Nohoch-Mul pyramid, which is the tallest in the Yucatan Peninsula at 137 feet high. Complement the cultural part of your trip by visiting one of the Mayan communities that are scattered throughout the region, where in addition to learning about their lifestyle, customs, and traditions, you can delight your palate by trying the delicacies of Mayan cuisine. While you’re there, you can also dive into cenotes and even experience a Mayan purification ceremony.
Cozumel is the largest island in the Mexican Carribean. It is mine and Zach FAVORITE place to visit. It is known for having the best water for scuba diving and snorkeling. The town is small and very safe. We like to explore the islands on a scooter that we rent there. They also rent jeeps, buggys and cars. (please see the link on where to rent). Its a 30 - 45 minute ferry ride from downtown playa del carmen. The Ferry is about $25 round trip. The ferry leads you right downtown.
