Go rafting on the beautiful Animas River right through Durango!!! Or get a floaty inter-tube, get in at 32nd Street and float to just near the high school. PFDs (and maybe a flask of bourbon) are recommended. You can also just hike along the trail across from the high school along the river and play in the river there. Sometimes there are a bunch of adults goofing off, sometimes it's full of kids, and sometimes you have it to yourself.
Go slidin' on one of those super fun alpine slides at Purgatory Resort. Also Purgatory is the site of the first World Mountain Bike race, and you can still ride the race trail, or take your bikes up the ski lift and feel the thrill of the downhill.
According to the NPS website: "Mesa Verde, Spanish for green table, offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years, from AD 600 to 1300. Today the park protects nearly 5,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. These sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States." It is a place not to be missed!
