Balos lagoon

734 00, Greece

Well-known, famous, photographed, dreamy, heavenly, unique, are only some of the characteristics of the lagoon of Balos. You just have to visit it and see on your own that it is one of the most beautiful Greek regions. Balos lagoon has shallow, warm waters with a bright turquoise color. The beach of Balos has also a stunning color, as in many places on the beach, the sand is pinkish, due to the countless broken shells. Exactly like Elafonisi! If you choose to travel by boat (suggested, as most car rentals forbid access with the rented car), there is a tiny uninhabited island Graboussa, before you arrive to Balos lagoon, northwest of Crete, it's famous for its Venetian castle and its blue crystal clear waters.

Elafonissi Beach

730 01, Greece

Elafonisi is one of the most breathtaking beaches on Crete Island. Its clear blue waters, pink sand, and its unique landscape attract thousands of visitors every year. It has been ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Along with the surrounding shores, it belongs to the Natura network because of its unique natural beauty. If in the area, try also the less known beach of Kedrodasos (Cedar tree forest beach).

Old Town

Chania, Greece

Prepare to get lost in the labyrinth of charming, narrow alleyways that lead to the famous Venetian Harbour. The architecture here is a spectacular blend of Venetian elegance and Ottoman charm, with colorful buildings that reflect the city's rich, multicultural past. The centerpiece is the stunning harbor, highlighted by the iconic Egyptian Lighthouse, which is the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a sunset dinner. As you wander, you’ll discover hidden squares, traditional tavernas serving authentic Cretan cuisine, and small artisan workshops.

Old Town

Rethimno, 741 31, Greece

In the old town of Rethymno you’ll find a honeycomb of cobbled alleyways and narrow streets dappled with shade from overhanging vines and bougainvillea. They’re lined with cute cafes, shops selling local crafts and restaurants dishing up the best Cretan food and Greek dishes. One of the best things to do in Rethymno is to explore them. Ancient buildings from Venetian times with doorways and arches set in mellow stone walls lead to enticing courtyards. The town is filled with historical sites and 16th century buildings, churches and olive trees line the pretty plazas.

Samaria National Park

730 11, Greece

The Samaria Gorge is a National Park and one of Europe's premier hiking destinations. The total trail length is approximately 16-18 kilometers and takes an average of 5 to 7 hours to complete. The trek is one-way, starting at Xyloskalo (Omalos Plateau) and descending to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli. Logistically, you reach the starting point by bus from Chania, but the crucial part is the exit: from Agia Roumeli, you must take a ferry (as there is no road) to Chora Sfakion or Sougia, and then a connecting bus back to your base, but the whole itinerary is well organized by the local authorities with clear info and ticket points. Be sure to bring sturdy hiking boots for this one!
