This and one of Erick and Betty's favorite museums. The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. The Museum has collected more than 36,000 artifacts and nearly 100,000 individuals have become members. The Museum opened to the public on September 24, 2016, as the 19th and newest museum of the Smithsonian Institution.
On the weekends, Eastern Market is an outdoor pedestrian mall that hosts a variety of arts and crafts, food stalls, and restaurants that can be enjoyable to walk through if you have some spare time. Look forward to a variety of unique crafts, fruits to taste and DC's twist on the Flea Market experience.
Sorry friends, this isn't an actual Mall. But the DC National Mall is located near many of the Smithsonian Museums. Some of our favorites are National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Botanical Gardens and Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden. Walking the monuments is lovely in September. Betty is particularly fond of the Lincoln Memorial. Erick is a big fan of the FDR Memorial. We're both in agreement about the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial (ask us about this later)!
If you're willing to move off the mall a little ways, the National Portrait Gallery, which hosts all of the Presidents' official portraits among other works of art, is another location that is worth stopping by. It's big so don't expect to get through all of it. If you need another reason, it's the site of one of Erick and Betty's first dates!
The H Street corridor has lots of food and drink options if you're staying in that area. Some of our favorite food places include H & Pizza, Farmbird, and Nando's Peri Peri. Fun bars in the area include Queen Vic, H Street Country Club (giant jenga and ski ball!), and Hill Prince. Feel free to also visit the site of our second first date, Maketto (part sneaker store, coffeeshop, and restaurant)!
This is a wax museum in DC. If you want a picture with a famous celebrity, here's your chance! This is a mainstay attraction when people visit Erick in DC.
